Balbir Singh MRF from Chennai defeated State Bank of Mysore by 33 runs in the day/night final of the 14th All India J.P.Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament at the PCA Stadium in Mohali here on Sunday night.
Required to score 325, State Bank of Mysore began on a disappointing note as their two top batsmen were dismissed with scorebreading only nine runs. Then K.N. Ramesh and B. Akhil were associated in a 67- run stand in just 62 balls. Skipper Thilkha Naidu played a lion-hearted innings of 81 runs in as many balls, with the help of five boundaries and a six. He was supported by middle order batsman Chetan Williams who scored 50 runs in 51 balls with six hits to fence and one over it. Wicketkeeper batsman Sasi Kumar played an innings of his life by contributing 40 runs in just 32 balls. However, State Bank of Mysore innings folded at a total of 291 runs.
Shikar Dhawan for his knock off 161 runs was declared man of the match. For capturing 15 wickets Sarabjit Singh of PCA Colts was adjudged the best bowler. Shikar Dhawan was declared best batsman of the tournament whereas Daniel Manohar was declared man of the series.
Additional Director Generral of Police, Haryana, Chander Shekar gave away the prizes. The winners received a cheque of Rs 1.5 lakh and runners-up Rs 60,000.
Earlier, MRF captain Venugopal Rao won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Daniel Manohar and Shikar Dhawan gave a solid start as the opening pair reached 50 runs in only 8th over. Dhawan was more aggressive as he contributed 31 runs in 50 runs partnership. The opening pair added 184 runs in just 181 balls. Daniel Manohar contributed 78 runs in 94 balls whereas Shikar Dhawan added 88 runs in 87 balls.
Daniel Manohar was first to depart as he was caught and bowled by left arm spinner Anand Katti. Manohar's effort of 78 runs includes 8 hits to fence and one over it. Another two wickets of MRF XI fell cheaply in the shape of Venugopal Rao (6) and Parveen Srivatav (6). Sunil Vishawnathan step in and added valuable 70 runs in 63 balls for the fourth wicket partnership with dangerous looking Shikar Dhawan. Sunil Vishawnathan chipped in with 24 runs of 29 balls.
Dhawan completed his 50 with a single towards fine leg which included nine fours. Dhawan completed his century with a glance to fine leg boundry off Anand Katti. Saurab Tiwari scored a brisk 20 runs in just 8 balls with the help of two boundaries and a six. Shikar Dhawan was sent back to pavilion by left arm spinner Anand Katti who trapped him in front of wickets. Dhawan scored valuable 161 runs, his marathon innings came in 139 balls with the help of 15 boundaries and two sixes. MRF Chennai pile up a mighty total of 324 runs for the loss of six wickets in allotted 50 overs.
Left arm spinner Anand Katti was more successful bowler for the State Bank of Mysore as he captured 4 wickets at the cost of 68 runs, B.Akhil Kumar claimed 2 wickets by spending 64 runs.
