With a view to streamling the coaching system on a scientific manner, appointment of 169 coaches of different disciplines and 76 supporting staff is a giant step to uplift the standard of sports in Punjab. Paucity of trainers in the state was a big hurdle in providing proper training. The situation further worsened when the Sports Authority of India also reduced the strength of its coaches in Punjab and other states.
Punjab Sports Director Padam Shree Pargat Singh, a man from the field, convinced the state government the immediate need to strengthen the coaching department. He systematically followed the procedure and achieved his objective to have sufficient number of coaches at his disposal. The Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, young Member of Parliament Sukhbir Singh Badal, Sports Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, Secretary Sports RS Pawar and other officials understood the requirement and the year brought cheers among the trainees as the Government gave green light to the appointment of 169 coaches and the supporting staff. The coaches have been deputed at coaching centres.
It was a big achievement of the Punjab Sports Department which is looking for a bright tomorrow for sportspersons. Among those appointed coaches on contract includes international volleyball player Chanchal and former international gymnast Manjit Singh. They are both retired Commandant in Border Security Force.
HOCKEY CLINIC UNDER FIH COACH SHIV JAGDAY: The former Indian captain and coach Pargat Singh was also instrumental in roping in International Hockey Federation (FIH) Grade I coach Canadian Shiv Jagday's for a two-week hockey clinic from June 6 to 12 at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar.
Physical fitness, sports psychology and hockey were the three main parts of the well-attended clinic. Mohinder Singh Dhillon of Sports Authority of India looked after the physical fitness aspect while Dr Jyoti Kantikar of Pune dealt on psychology. Shiv Jagdey's focus was on technical and tactical aspects of hockey.
Former coach of the Indian team Jagmohan Singh worked on the specific exercises required for a hockey player. Dhillon taught complete warm-up exercise, ABC speed, core strength development, basic and advance strength, endurance, speed, aerobics, explosive strength and agility. The Sports Department has documented the practical sessions and DVDs were distributed among the coaches. Former Indian coach Sukhvir Singh Grewal played an important role as a coordinator.
On the invitation of Pargat Singh, Australian legendary hockey coach Richard Charlesworth also educated the coaches and the players for two days. Charlesworth noticed lack of mobility among the players; not creating space and running without scanning the field.
More than 250 hockey trainees from all coaching centres of Punjab, and hockey academies of Spring Dales, Amritsar, Khalsa College, Amritsar, Surjit Hockey Academy of Jalandhar, Malwa Khalsa School, Ludhiana and Anne's Academy, Sector 69 Mohali and 55 coaches, including nine from the Sports Department and Punjab Police officials on deputation to the Punjab Sports Department, were benefited from the clinic.
Olympians Rajpal Singh, Prabhjot Singh, internationals Jagdeep Singh Gill, Ripudaman and Davinder Kumar also attended the clinic.
SIX SIX-A-SIDE- ASTROTURFS: The year was also profitable for budding players. As many as 3000 players in different sports disciplines were shortlisted after trials to be admitted in 250 sports wings in schools and colleges throughout the state.
Decision to lay six six-a-side astro hockey turfs has been also taken. Sansarpur, earlier known as hockey nursery of India will soon have a six-a-side hockey turf. Talwandi Saboo will also boast of a six-a-side astroturf. The synthetic hockey turf of the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium will be replaced. The process of laying synthetic turfs has already started.
SPORTS KITS DISTRIBUTED AMONG 12,000: Member Parliament Sukhbir Badal also distributed sports equipment worth Rs 75 lakh among 12,000 trainees in Jalandhar on October 15. Trainees of hockey and football academies of the state were given complete sports kits. Punjab shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won the first individual gold for India in Beijing Olympics was given a cash award of Rs one crore.
MAHARAJA RANJIT SINGH AWARD: Applications have been invited for conferring the prestigious Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award. As many as 84 outstanding players in the last four years would be presented the highest state sports award which carries a purse of Rs one lakh, a citation and statute of Maharaja Ranjit Singh astride a horse.
SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE IN VILLAGES. The Central Government has sanctioned Rs 12.5 crore to provide sports infrastructure in 14 blocks covering 1233 villages. The development will be in phased manner and completed in 10 years. The state government's contribution will be 25 per cent of the Centre's grant-in-aid.
An Open Stadium in Ranike (Amritsar) will be constructed at an initial cost of Rs 34 lakh. The Ranike Stadium will have an eight-lane grass track and other facilities.
The Department conducted a number of tournaments, from block level to national levels.
More than 7000 players attended the summer coaching camps in May-June at district headquarters.
The Punjab started in the right direction to once again become the sports arm of India.

Jyoti Randhawa produced a magical eight under 64 to win the BILT Open 2008 at the Jaypee Greens Golf Course on Sunday. Randhawa (68, 69, 68, 64), who was six strokes off the lead after round three, finished with a total of 19 under 269 to take home the winner's cheque of Rs. 12,93,200. Jeev Milkha Singh (67, 66, 70, 67) and Anirban Lahiri (65, 66, 68, 71) finished tied second at 18 under 270.
Randhawa has now achieved five wins out of five starts on the PGTI. He won three titles in the 2006-07 PGTI season and followed that up with two titles in the current season.
The curtain was drawn on the 2007-08 PGTI season with the culmination of the BILT Open 2008. Mukesh Kumar ended the season as the PGTI Order of Merit champion for 2007-08 with earnings of Rs. 34,31,992. Mukesh posted four wins and seven other top 10s out of 19 starts in the current season. Shamim Khan was second on the PGTI Order of Merit, while Rahul Ganapathy finished third.
Jyoti, the 2006 BILT Open champion, birdied the second, third, fourth, seventh, eighth, 10th, 12th, bogeyed the 13th and made an eagle on the par five 15th in the final round even as the lead changed hands several times between Anirban and him.
Chandigarh-based Jeev Milkha Singh began his day with a bogey on the 17th hole from round three after play started three hours late due to the fog in the morning. He then birdied the third, fourth, fifth, 10th, 15th, 16th and bogeyed the sixth in round four.
Jeev said, "Four three-putts on the final day let me down. I played rock solid and had a number in mind for the final day. However, three-putts on the 17th in round three and on the sixth in the final round put me off-track. The seven feet putt that I missed for birdie on the final hole was also quite disappointing. Had I made that putt, the tournament would have gone into a play-off between Jyoti and me."
Jeev, who played his first event on the PGTI, went on to add, "Jyoti was exceptional, especially on the last day and he is the deserving winner. Anirban also handled himself really well for a 21-year-old." "It's been a very long and highly successful year for me and I am now all set to take a break from competitive golf for some time," added Jeev.
Anirban Lahiri had a mixed day today, making an eagle on the par four ninth, birdies on the fifth, 15th, 18th, a bogey on the third and a double bogey on the eighth. Shiv Kapur and Rahil Gangjee were both tied fourth at 13 under 275, while Amandeep Johl and Shamim Khan, a double winner on the PGTI this season, shared sixth place at 11 under 277. Gaganjeet Bhullar was a further stroke behind in eighth.
SSP Chowrasia totaled six under 282 to be tied 12th. The 2006-07 PGTI Order of Merit winner Ashok Kumar finished 17th at four under 284. Mukesh Kumar, who won the PGTI Order of Merit crown for 2007-08, was placed tied 18th at three under 285.

Kolkata, Dec 25

After 36 holes of enthralling matchplay, Moin Malak came through to register his first win on the LG Amateur Tour. In a tightly fought contest, Moin sunk a birdie putt on the final hole to pip Arshdeep Tiwana at the post and win the finals of the LG-Goodricke Eastern India Amateur that was being played at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club.
Both players were looking for their maiden title on tour and in the end, despite a great showing in the tournament, Arshdeep will have to wait a little while longer for that elusive win. The tie see-sawed between the two before a thrilling last hole birdie for Moin to go one up and seal the match in his favour.
Moin sent out his signal of intent with a brilliant recovery on the first hole, that saw him hit his third shot, from in between trees and without the flag stick in sight, to two feet from the pin. On the next hole, Moin went one up with a birdie before a run of poor holes from nine to fourteen set him back. Moin made five consecutive bogeys on that stretch to go three down and allowed Arshdeep to breathe easy.
After the completion of the first 18 holes, Arshdeep maintained his advantage and when play resumed after the break, he looked set to increase his lead. But Moin came back strongly to close out the deficit and leave the tie delicately poised.
Arshdeep, who enjoyed a fabulous run throughout the tournament, came back to win two holes and maintained his stranglehold going into the last nine holes. Moin made it all square with a forty-foot putt on the 31st hole. From there on, it was a battle of nerves and it all came down to the final hole after a marathon match, that saw the lead switch between the two men.
Final score: (21) Moin Malak def. (23) Arshdeep Tiwana – 1 Up.

Lahiri is currently at the top of the leaderboard as only 96 professionals out of a total of 118 could complete round one on Thursday as a result of the one and a half hour delay due to fog in the morning. Anirban Lahiri began with a birdie on the first and then went on to knock down two more on the fifth and seventh to make the turn at three under. The Bangalore-based professional made four birdies on the back nine - 11 th, 12th, 15th and 16th, to close with a 65.
Kolkata's Rahil Gangjee fired another bogey-free round for second place on day one. Gangjee got off to a dream start with birdies on the first two holes. He then came up with four more birdies on the fourth, 12th, 15th and 18th to finish the day at six under 66, one stroke off the lead.
Jeev Milkha Singh is currently in tied third place, having shot five under 67 on Thursday. Jeev, who started from the 10th tee, birdied the 12th, 13th, 15th, second, fourth, fifth, seventh and bogeyed the 10th and third.
Jeev said, "It was a pretty solid round for me today. I missed only two greens today and made bogeys on those very holes. The birdie on the par three seventh was special because my tee shot rolled past the flag and thereafter the ball came back towards the pin due to the slope."
He added, "The course is playing really well and one needs to be a good driver to succeed here. The bunkers are also very well placed."
Shamim Khan also shot 67 to join Jeev in tied third place. Jyoti Randhawa, Gaganjeet Bhullar, SSP Chowrasia, Shiv Kapur, Gaurav Ghei and Mohd Siddikur Rahman are all tied fifth with identical first round scores of four under 68.

Chandigarh Football Academy, a venture of the Chandigarh Administration, outplayed Sikh Temple Football Club of Canada by 3-0 in a friendly football match at the Sector 17 here today. A sizable crowd turned up to watch the match.
The skillful, robust and speedy Chandigarh Football Academy, a brain child of former Punjab Governor-cum-Administrator Chandigarh J.F.R. Jacob, could have won still by a bigger margin had they converted all the chances that came their way. The Canadian goalkeeper Bavan Sahota also gave a delighted display under the bar and made a couple of spectatular saves.
The CFA boys enjoyed the territorial supremacy in both sessions but they failed to score a goal in the first half. The hosts mostly camped inside the rival territory. Bikramjit and Pankaj Negi muffed easy chances to score. First Bikramjit's sizzling shot sailed over the bar. Then Rajinder gave a perfect forward pass to nippy Pankaj Negi who could not take advantage of the chance from a handshaking distance.
After a goalless draw, the CF Academy opened the account in the 31st minute. Trapping a pass, Bikramjit unleashed a powerful floating shot. Canadian goalkeeper Bavan Sahota jumped into the air and stopped it with extended right hand. The ball dropped on the goalline before crossing over.
The CFA boys continued their pressure and nine minutes later ebullient Pankaj Negi volleyed an angular shot from the right flank and the ball zoomed into the far net for CFA's second well-earned goal. Negi himself rounded off the winners' tally in the 60th minute.
Canadian coach Sukhi Sandhu praised the CFA players for their brilliant display. He described the 'standard of the CFA players very high at this age (under 15-16 years)."
Baljinder Singh of CFA was cautioned for dangerous play.
Among those pressent on the occasion were Chandigarh Sports Director IS Sandhu, Joint Sports Director Dr JPS Sidhu and parents of the Canadian team.
A memento was presented to the Chandigarh Sports Director on behalf of parents of the Canadian team. CFA coaches Harjinder Singh and Tejinder Kumar were also presented mementos by the Sikh Temple Football Club.

Jeev eyes Major goals after Asian supremacy

BANGKOK, December 21
New Asian number one Jeev Milkha Singh believes he can now win a Major title which will enable him to 'sit at the same table with my father'.
The Indian star wrapped up his campaign at the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia on Sunday to be officially crowned the 2008 Asian Tour's Order of Merit champion and immediately set out his next goal which is to challenge for one of the four most prized trophies in world golf.
"This has been the best year so far in my career. In 2006, I also had four wins but I rate this season better due to my performances in the Majors. It has given me a lot of confidence and I'm more comfortable and confident when I'm under pressure. I know my swing is better and that has taken me further up in my game," said Singh, who shot rounds of 76, 70, 70 and 72 to finish in the middle of the field at Thai Country Club.
The 37-year-old made history by becoming the first player to win over US$1 million in a single season on the Asian Tour, thanks largely to his stunning triumph over a world-class field at the Barclays Singapore Open last month.
He registered two other runner-up finishes in Indonesia and Korea in a stellar season which also saw him triumph once in Europe and twice in Japan to rise to his current career-high 36th place in the Official World Golf Ranking. In addition, he finished tied 25th at the US Masters and posted a career-first top-10 in a Major by finishing equal ninth at the US PGA Championship.
"Winning the Order of Merit twice in three years is special. It has given me a lot of confidence as I've proven myself again and you then try to move on to bigger things," said jEEV, who was also the region's top player in 2006.
"I think I've got the game to win a Major. I feel it all depends on the mindset that week and how you deal with the pressure. A lot of it comes down to the short game. I feel I do have the game and hopefully before my golfing career is over, I will have a Major under my belt," said Jeev.
The son of the legendary runner Milkha Singh, who is a decorated Olympic runner for India, Jeev said that despite his golfing achievements over the past three seasons, he still feels he has yet to measure up to his father's iconic status.
"Dad is still a bigger name than I in India," said Jeev with a smile. "A Major under my belt, then I can sit at the same table as him.
"Coming from a sporting family (his mother was also the captain of the national volleyball team), my father always emphasised discipline, work ethic and honesty. I've had positive feedback from my parents and that has helped get me to where I am today. My wife Kudrat has also been very supportive."
Jeev plans to scale down his playing schedule in 2009 after competing in over 35 events each season around the globe, so much so that he should inherit his father's nickname as the "Flying Sikh".
As the saying partly goes, there will be no rest for the wickedly talented as Jeev has already engaged a physical trainer to start work with him next week as part of his plan to challenge for Major honours.
"I need to get fit in 2009. I've had a lot of injuries. I have put on weight as I normally run a mile a day but I've been unable to do so with my ankle injury since June. I have people in place starting on December 28 who will train me and help get me fit. My main goal over the next six months is to get fit," said Jeev.
He also looked back at his career which started in Asia way back in 1995 and was proud to see the Asian Tour grow to record levels where this season, an unprecedented 30 events with an all-time high US$39 million was on offer to the region's talented players.
"The Asian Tour has given me a lot. That's the main reason I'm here this week, to also receive the Order of Merit award and give back to the Asian Tour for what it has done in my career," said Jeev Milkha.

He wrote" after 8 wonderful years in Spain I have excepted an invitation to return to Holland. It was an unexpected change in my professional situation. After the silver medal in the Beijing Olympics the Team indicated that they would like for me to continue as their coach, this was followed by a generous offer from the Royal Spanish Hockey Federation. Just when I was about to sign with the newly chosen president of the Rfeh Santi Deo, I was approached by the Dutch Olympic Committee, who offered me the post of Chef de Mission/Technical Director of the Dutch Olympic Team for the London 2012 Olympics."
"I have always thought that this was one of the most challenging positions in sport and a great honour to be offered to lead all sports in the Netherlands. And thus, with pain in my heart I decided to say goodbye to the Spanish hockey team and take on this challenge. I cannot close this important chapter in my life without paying respect to my players, my staff and my opponents, with whom I have had to honour to compete all over the world in World Cups, Champions Trophies and Olympics. Many are the memories of glory and of pain in defeat, but most of all I leave the sport of hockey with friendships all over the world, friendships that I know will continue to be."

Befitting it is to end the Olympic year taking the rein of the Dutch Olympic team in the road to London 2012."

May we continue to cross our paths in the future," concluded Maurits Hendriks

Shamim, the wire-to-wire leader from round one to round four, shot two under 70 in the final round to end the tournament with a total of 12 under 276. Amardip Sinh Malik (71, 66, 73, 69) finished three strokes behind Shamim in second place.
Shamim, who had won PGTI's last event in Jamshedpur, earlier this month, now has a total of four professional titles in his kitty. Two of his four wins have come on the PGTI. The Delhi golfer's win has also propelled him from fourth to second place on the 2007-08 PGTI Order of Merit. The 30-year-old went past Rahul Ganapathy in total earnings for the season when he picked up the winner's cheque of Rs. 3,23,300
Shamim's birdies on the second and fourth helped him maintain his overnight four-stroke cushion till the fifth hole even as his nearest rival Amardip Sinh Malik picked up birdies on the first two holes. The gap between the top two contenders started closing thereafter as 23-year-old Malik followed up a birdie-bogey on the sixth and seventh with two successive birdies on the eighth and ninth. Khan, on the other hand, dropped a bogey after finding the water hazard on the par three 10th hole.
There was a difference of just one stroke between Shamim and Amardip when they approached the 11th tee. Malik dropped a shot when he bogeyed the 11th but the Meerut-based professional came back to within one stroke of the leader by making birdie on the 14th.
After firing six straight pars from the 11th to the 16th, Shamim knocked in a birdie with a 15 feet putt on hole no. 17 to establish a two-stroke lead. Amardip then produced a bogey on the final hole as he pulled his tee-shot into the water hazard on the left side of the 18th fairway. Meanwhile, Shamim sealed his win when he made par on the 18th despite going over the green with his second shot.
Delhi's Vinod Kumar (67, 74, 72, 69) finished third with a total of six under 282.
Toran Bikram Shahi of Nepal was one stroke behind Vinod in fourth place. Toran and Mukesh Kumar shot matching 65s to record the best scores of round four. Toran's 65 included two eagles.
Mukesh Kumar, Harmeet Kahlon, Rahil Gangjee and C Muniyappa shared fifth place at four under 284. Ashok Kumar's total of even par 288 placed him tied 11th. Rahul Ganapathy finished tied 14th with an overall score of one over 289.

Shamim Khan maintained his lead at the ONGC Masters 2008 despite firing a score of three over 75 in round three on Friday. Shamim's total moved to 10 under 206 after the third round. The Delhi golfer still enjoys a four-stroke cushion as Vijay Kumar and Amardip Sinh Malik have the next best total of six under 210. Shamim is now in line for his second straight title on PGTI, having won the last PGTI event in Jamshedpur earlier this month.
Shamim (65, 66, 75) began poorly on day three as he bogeyed the first two holes. He soon came back with birdies on the seventh and eighth to make the turn at even par. The 30-year-old then struggled on the back nine, making bogeys on the 11th, 13th, 15th, 16th before coming up with a birdie on the 17th.
"The conditions were quite tough today as it was very windy. In the prevailing conditions I thought three over was not that bad. I tried to make pars because I knew that it would be difficult to control the ball and hit it close in the windy conditions. I struggled with the putter today and missed a number of close putts," said Shamim.
Vijay Kumar's (71, 71, 68) performance stood out in round three. His four under 68 turned out to be the best score on Friday. The Lucknow-based professional is currently tied second at six under 210. He began with a birdie on the first and followed it up with another on the seventh to make the turn at two under. His first bogey came on the 11th. Vijay then produced birdie-birdie-bogey on the 14th, 15th, 16th before closing with consecutive birdies on the last two holes.
"I relish playing in windy weather and therefore my hitting was outstanding today. Three of my six birdies came as a result of hitting the ball within 2 feet of the hole. At the moment I am in great hitting form," said an excited Vijay Kumar.
Amardip Sinh Malik (71, 66, 73) joined Vijay in tied second after he produced two birdies and three bogeys in his round of one over 73.
C Muniyappa (70, 71, 71) is fourth at four under 212 while Rahil Gangjee, Vikrant Chopra, Himmat Singh Rai, Vinod Kumar and Raju Ali Mollah are a further stroke behind in tied fifth.
Rahul Ganapathy lies tied 11th with a total of one under 215. Ashok Kumar is tied 18th at two over 218 and Mukesh Kumar's total of three over 219 places him tied 24th.

Chandigarh-based HS Kang clinched the LG RCGC Cup at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club. This was the first win on the LG Amateur Tour this season for him. Fifteen-year-old Ashbeer Sainifrom Kapurthala finished four strokes back in second place. He impressed everyone with his skills but crumbled under pressure in the final round.
Pawan Kumar finished third along with Rahul Bajaj at five over par with a total score of 293, while Manav Das finished three strokes further back at 296. Both Rahul Bajaj and Manav Das have won once this year on the LG Amateur Tour. Gagan Verma, the leader on the LG Order of Merit list, finished 15th on the leader board. He had a terrible second round and never got back into contention after that.
Young Ashbeer raced off to a great start and after four holes had opened a five shot lead over Kang but his game fell apart after that with triple bogeys on the par-4 fifth and tenth hole. He never managed to catch up and eventually Kang's experience proved vital in sealing the four stroke win. In hindsight, Ashbeer frittered away the advantage as nerves took control of his game.
Kang did not get off to the best of starts but kept it together after a horrid front nine and finished with a three over 75 for a tournament total of one under par. Ashbeer carded a 79, his worst round over the duration of the tournament and finished with a four day total of three over par, 291.
Reflecting on the win Kang said "I had a terrible front nine and got unlucky in a couple of places but managed to hold on after that." This was his second win on the LG Amateur Tour after registering his maiden win on tour last year when he won the LG Samarvir Sahi Amateur. He still had words of confidence for the 15 year old lad, saying "He is a very good player but lacks experience right now. I am sure he will go on to win many titles in the future."
The next tournament on the LG Amateur Tour is the prestigious LG-Goodricke Eastern India Amateur which will commence at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club on Friday. While Kang would be hoping to continue his good form, Ashbeer gets a chance to redeem himself and he would be hoping to put on a good show once again.

Indian Masters postponed

CHANDIGARH, DEC 7
The Indian Masters, co-sanctioned by The European Tour, the Asian Tour and the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) and set to be played at the Delhi Golf Club, New Delhi, India, on February 5-8, will not take place on The 2009 European Tour International Schedule and Asian Tour Schedule.
Mohamed Juma Buamaim, Vice Chairman and CEO of ‘golf in Dubai’, said: “We have done everything possible to ensure that the second edition of the Indian Masters was played in 2009 but with this tournament we considered that the current economic uncertainty coupled to security concerns made it impossible for us to present the tournament in the manner that we would wish to for world class golfers.
“The inaugural edition of the Indian Masters played earlier this year created quite a buzz in India with the home-grown talent SSP Chowrasia beating a strong field to take the honours. The tournament, the first on The European Tour to be played in India, provided the home players an opportunity to hone their competitive skills in the company of some of the world’s finest players and we are confident that we will achieve this again in 2010.
“We are grateful to the Indian Golf Union, the PGTI and The Asian Tour for extending all their support in putting together the inaugural Indian Masters and we thank them for their patience, support and understanding as we do to the Delhi Golf Club to where we look forward to returning.”
George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, said: “We share with ‘golf in Dubai’ their disappointment that the Indian Masters will not be played in 2009. We understand, however, the economic challenges they face with title sponsorship and we are optimistic that this event which was such a success when first played in 2008 at the superb Delhi Golf Club will return to the schedule in 2010 co-sanctioned by The European Tour, the Asian Tour and the PGTI.”
