CHANDIGARH, JUNE 30

The Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy (CFHA), a venture of the Chandigarh Administration, handed out a 13-3 drubbing to Imperial College, London, in a hopelessly one-sided boys exhibition hockey match played at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. Gagandeep pumped in four goals, including a hat-trick, while Kanwaldeep netted three. The winners had established a commanding 4-1 lead at half time.
The CHFH Academy meant business from the word go. After wasting a penalty corner in the third minute, they forged ahead in the sixth minute with skipper Gurjinder converting a penalty corner. The state-run academy won another penalty corner three minutes later but it was wasted. The CFHA doubled their lead in the 14th minute when Gagandeep opened his individual account through an excellent field goal (2-0). For the next 11 minutes the match belonged to Gagandeep as he scored two more scintillating field goals in the 19th and 25th minutes, respectively, to make it 4-0 and complete his three-in-a-row feat.

The visting team reorganised their game and in the 29th minute Ewan Quince pulled one back through a field goal (4-1). At the start of the second half half Kanwaldeep trapped the ball neatly just inside the striking circle and hammered it home to make it 5-1.

On crossing over, the Chandigarh boys started dictated terms in an even more dominating manner, which further demoralized a ‘at the end of their wits’ English team. Kanwaldeep again caught the Imperial College defence sleeping and scored his second goal and the team’s sixth in the 35th minute (6-1). With this strike the floodgates virtually opened and the CFHA’s Gurjant made it 7-1 with an excellent individual effort in the 38th minute. In the 39th minute the local lads won a penalty corner but it went a begging. Gagandeep scored his fourth in the 45th minute (8-1). A minute later Kanwaldeep dodging past two defenders and sold a dummy to the goalkeeper and put the ball into the goal mouth to make it 9-1.
Bikramjeet and Damandeep also got on the score sheet when they scored goals in the 56th and 56th minutes (11-1) to end the visiting team’s misery.
In the second match which was played under lights, the CFHA girls thrashed their counterparts from Imperial College by 11-0. Sandeep scored three fine field goals while Shivani, Ritu, Reena sounded the board twice each. Jyoti and Jayanti scored one goal each.
