Chandigarh bowlers placed their team back into the game as they dismissed Jalandhar for 219 in 81 overs in their second innings on the penultimate day of the four-day Punjab Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Katoch Shield at the PCA Stadium here today. Jalandhar had taken a 34-run lead on first innings. At close of play on the third day, Chandigarh, needing 254 for victory in 102 overs, knocked off 42 without loss in eight overs.
Starting the innings with the centurion of first innings Satpal and Pargat Singh, Jalandhar lost their first wicket at 21 when medium pacer Satnam Singh induced an edge from Pargat Singh to be snapped up by wicketkeeper Simrat Bawa with his individual score of 12 off 13 balls aided by two fours.
Left arm spinner Rahul Chara dealt a big blow to the fortune of Jalandhar team when he castled in-form Satpal with an armer for 20 and the team’s total reading 36. Skipper Taruwar Kohli kept one end up while the wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end. The spinning duo of Rahul Chara and Anshul Tripathi wove a web around Jalandhar batsmen and accounted for Sumit Brara (7), Robin Singh (1), Abhishek Gupta (05), Love Kumar Singh (0) by claiming two wickets apiece and reducing Jalandhar to a miserable 98 for 6.
At this stage leg spinner Rahul Sharma, who had got a haul of six wickets in first innings got together with skipper Taruwar Kohli and stitched a 40 runs partnership for the seventh wicket when medium pacer Satnam Singh had Taruwar Kohli plumb in front of the wicket for a captain’s knock of 74 off 136 balls embellished with 12 well struck boundaries at team’s total reading 138 for 7. Medium pacer Amrinder Sodhi joined Rahul Sharma and the two carried the total to 172 before Rahul Sharma was cleaned up by Anshul Tripathi for a well made 42 (7x4s). The last Jalandhar wicket fell at 219 when Navdeep Singh holed out to Gurkirat Walia of the bowling of Anshul Tripathi for 5. Jalandhar innings ended at 219 for all in 85.1 overs. Left arm spinner Rahul Chara (4 for 70) and Anshul Tripathi (4 for 73) were ably supported by medium pacer Satnam Singh (2 for 43) in restricting Jalandhar to a meager total.
Chasing a victory target of 254 in 102 overs, Chandigarh started their second innings with Sarul Kanwar (38 not out off 14 balls, 7x4s) and Simrat Bawa (4 not out). At close Chandigarh were 42 for no loss.
