Propped up by a hurricane century by opener Sarul Kanwar, Chandigarh registered a facile nine-wicket verdict against Jalandhar in the final of the Punjab Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Katoch Shield at the PCA Stadium here in Mohali. Overnight 42 for no loss, Chandigarh continued in the same vein and stitched a 234-run partnership for the firstt wicket in just 40.3 overs before Sarul Kanwar was snapped up by wicketkeeper Abhishek of Yogesh Kumar with his individual score reading 183. Sarul Kanwar dispatched the Jalandhar bowlers to all parts of the ground with 30 ferociously struck boundaries. He also essayed four effortless towering sixes.
The other opener South paw Simrat Bawa completed a sedate unbeaten half century (65) off 119 balls inclusive of nine well struck boundaries. Amit Prashar gave him company with unbeaten 8 runs of 14 balls with the help of 2x4s and helped Chandigarh to win the prestigious Katoch Shield by nine wickets.
With this blistering century Sarul Kanwar became the highest run getter of the tournament (746) at an astounding average of 106.57 while Amit Prashar 691 at an average of 136.20 and Taruwar Kohli (Jalandhar) 646 at an average of 107.76 were the principal run getters of the tournament. Rahul Sharma (25 wickets at an average of 26.20) , Chandigarh's Rahul Chara (18 wickets at an average of 34.94), Amritsar's Lakshay Seth (17 wickets at an average of 29.64) were the principal wicket takers of the tournament.
M.P. Pandove, Hony. Treasurer, BCCI and Hony. Secretary, PCA gave away the glittering trophy to the Chandigarh team alongwith a cash prize of Rs one lakh while the runners-up Jalandhar got a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.00.
