A unique three-in-a-row feat by Raminder Singh helped Indian Air Force beat Electrical and Mechanical Engineers by 3-1 and entered quarter-final of the 39th SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the floodlit Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here tonight. Their rivals in quarter-final will be Indian Oil Corporation who got straight bye into the last eight on the basis of their last year’s performance.
Stunned by an early setback as EME shot into the lead in the fifth minute through Gurwinder Singh who converted a penalty corner, Indian Air Force hit back with vengeance. It was Raminder who converted three penalty conrers in the 18th, 22nd and 52nd minutes to fashion IAF’s victory. IAF forced six penalty coners while EME were awarded three penalty corners.
Indian Army also moved into quarter-final after beating Punjab National Bank by 4-2 in the pre-quarter-final. The teams were locked 2-all at the regulation period. PBN forged ahead in the eighth minute through a field goal scored by Yudvir. Masid Bangra restored parity for Indian Army by scoring a field goal in the 20th minute. Indian Army then got the lead in the 31st minute through a penalty conversion by Varun Kumar. Two minutes before the lemon break, Daman put PNB at par with a field goal. On crossing over, Indian Army dominated and added two more goals to emerge wnners. Anil Ekka scored both goals in the 45th and 52nd minutes.
Indian Army are now pitted against Air India (North) in quarter-final.
Namdhari XI qualified to challenge Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in the quarter-final after beating Ropar Hawks by 4-1. Namdharis scored through Gurvinder Singh (3rd), Gurbhej (18th, penalty corner), Sukhchain Singh (32nd) and Malak Singh (55th). Ropar Hawks reduced the margin through Kulbir Singh (16th).
Tomorrow’s fixtures (q-finals): BPCL v/s BSF (4 p.m). Air India vs Army XI (5.30 p.m).
