International and junior Indian captain Tanvi Bhargava gave a splendid performance as last year's runners-up St Stephen's School defeated Vivek High School,Sector 38 by 2-0 in the four-team Super League match in the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Girls Football Tournament for Dr KC Bhargava Trophy being organised by the Chandigarh Football Association at the St Stephen's School ground in Sector 45 here today.
Showing fine dribbling and shooting skills, Tanvi Bhargava outpaced a couple of defenders before shooting powerfully to score in the 14th minute.
Vivek High School girls put up a good resistance but could not deny St Stephen's their second goal. It was talented Tanvi again who beat the rival defence to score in the 33rd minute. With this victory, St Stephen's logged three full points from their opening fixture.
In the second Super League contest, defending champions Carmel Convent, Sector 9 eked out a narrow 1-0 triumph over Sacred Heart, Sector 26. In the evenly contested match, Meghna Bhasin scored the all-important goal in the second half after a goalless first session.
Sprightly Meghna Bhasin converted penalty in a smooth action. The spot-kick was awarded to Carmel Convent in the 47th minute when a defender of Sacred Heart handled the ball inside the proscribed box. The winners obtained three points from the opening match.
St Stephen's School and Carmel Convent were given straight bye into the Super League on the basis of their performance in the last edition of the tournament.
Tomorrow, Carmel Convent will meet St Stephen's School at 10 a.m. and Sacred Heart will face Vivek High School at 11 a.m. Both matches will be played at St Stephen's School ground in Sector 45.
