BRISBANE, FEB 18

India suffered their first defeat of their Australia - New Zealand tour when they were beaten 5-3 by the Australian Development squad at the State Hockey Centre here on Tuesday night.
The hosts who led 3-1 at half time profited due to a lacklustre Indian showing both in attack and defence.
The Aussies scored through Jason Wilson (10th), Nick Budgeon (22nd), Joel Carrol (27th), Liam de Young (52nd) and Mark Patterson (66th). India reduced the margin through
Sandeep Singh (16th), VR Raghunath (37th) and Tushar Khandker (64th).
The match had a delayed start due to rain and was played under constant drizzle.
The Australia team went up in the 10th minute when Jonathon Charlesworth intercepted a loose pass from Indian midfielder Prabodh Tirkey to set up striker Jason Wilson who shot past goalkeeper Baljit Singh.
India leveled the score six minutes later when Ignace Tirkey stole the ball from the rival skipper Liam de Young and sent a relay pass to Tushar Khandker through armyman SV Sunil. Khandker's shot at goal was stopped by a backstick and the resultant penalty stroke was converted by Sandeep Singh.
Australia forged ahead again after getting a penalty corner because of an erroneous clearance by Vikram Pillay. Budgeon flicked low to Baljit's right.
India muffed two opportunities to equalise shortly after when Sunil and Shivendra Singh fumbled inside the circle and then Khandker shot wide.
Australia consolidated their lead in the 27th minute after conceding a soft penalty corner to Brent Livermore. Defender Joel Carrol made no mistake from the set piece.
A heavy downpour at the break again delayed the second half start, but India began aggressively and reduced the margin from a penalty corner as Raghunath flicked past George Bazeley in the 37th minute.
However Australia were again back with the two-goal cushion when the overlapping Young found the mark in the 52nd minute.

Kaira and Bhardwaj star for Godrej CC

BARWALA (PANCHKULA), FEB 15

A hurricane knock of 102 off 49 bals by Umesh Kaira and deadly bowling by Ajay Bhardwaj (6 for 15) enabled Godrej Cricket Club defeat Numero Uno XI by 108 runs in the IInd Tilak Ram Mittal Memorial League Cricket Tournament, being organised by Chandigarh Sports Club here at JR Institute Stadium in Barwala today.
Batting first after winning the toss, Godrej Cricket Club were quick off the block as openers Jai Kapil and skipper Vaneet Chawla (41) gave the team a solid start with a partnership of 75 runs. Vaneet Chawla did most of the run making as he played shots all over the field. He went on to make 41 runs off 34 balls.
Umesh Kaira took time to settle down. Once he got going there was no stopping him. He went after every bowler. He quickly got to his century in just 47 balls. His unbeaten knock of 102 included 9 fours and six sixes. Kaira guided Godrej CC to a respectable total of 208 runs in 25 overs.
Shekhar picked up three wickets for 18 runs.
In reply, Numero Uno XI had a moderate start as the openers put on 46 runs. But after the dismissal of opener Shekhar things went downhill for them as the bowlers led by Ajay Bhardwaj seemed to have found a chink in the armour of the batting line up. Ajay Bhardwaj picked up a wicket in his very first over and bowled very economically. He was instrumental in making inroads into the batting line-up of Numero Uno. The batsmen gave away their wickets easily as the whole team succumbed under the pressure. Opener Neeraj (49) was the only one who put up some resistance and stayed on till the end. But all his resistance went in vain as other batsmen did not make much of a contribution and the team was bowled out for a meagre 90 runs in 20 overs. Ajay bhardwaj finished the innings with 6 wickets for 15 runs included a maiden.
Brief scores: Godrej CC: - 208 for 7 in 25 overs (Umesh Kiara 102 not out, Vaneet Chwala 41, Shekhar 3 for 18, Vidyasagar 2 for 36). Numero Uno XI: 90 all out in 20.3 overs (Neeraj 49, Ajay Bhardwaj 6 for 15, Umesh Kaira 1 for 4).
In the second match of the day, Royal CC defeated Chandigarh Medi Club by 8 wickets helped by fine bowling by Pawan who struck thrice in his maiden over and then once again in his next to wrap u the innings. The batsmen were disappointing as none of them showed any intention of making runs. As a result the team was bowled out for 103 runs in 19.2 overs. The batsmen of Royal CC made short work of the target as they lost no time in going on the offensive and got to the target in 11 overs with 8 wickets in hand.
Brief scores: Chandigarh Media Club: 103 all out in 19.2 overs (Divesh 53, Pawan 4 for 0, Satish 2 for 3). Royal CC: 104 for 2 in 11.5 overs (Narinder Bunty 48, Rajesh Monu 34).

He had all but sealed the title when he made the turn, having sunk birdies on the second, fifth, sixth and an eagle on the ninth. On the back nine Mukesh hung on to his comfortable lead after making birdies on the 14th and 16th and bogeys on the 12th and 15th.

FIH introduces new free hit rules

Custom Search

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) released the revised free hit rules because of the great interest in them. The next Rules of Hockey will take affect from 1 May 2009 and the full set of rules will be published as soon as possible.
One of the objectives of the FIH and therefore of the Hockey Rules Board (HRB) is to decrease the number and duration of interruptions to the flow of play and to increase the length of time the ball is in active play. A “self-pass” from a free hit has therefore been introduced. It enables the player taking the free hit to play the ball again after taking the free hit which will encourage free-flowing hockey.
As with other actions on the hockey pitch, this must take place safely. Other aspects of the free hit rules have therefore been reviewed. The HRB is concerned that the ball is often played hard, indiscriminately and therefore potentially dangerously into the circle from free hits in the attacking 23 metres area. In future, these free hits must not be played directly into the circle.
FIH believes these are indications of the way it wishes to see hockey develop. Exciting innovations will take place but there will also always be a concern that the game should be as safe as reasonably possible.
These rules changes are referred to as Mandatory Experimental Rules. They are mandatory because they must be played throughout hockey; they are experimental to show that they will be reviewed after experience before deciding if they become permanent Rules. When the full set of the Rules of Hockey is published, small changes to some wording and various additional notes will also added to clarify certain current rules. It is anticipated that the full set of Rules will be published in the next month or so.
The text of the relevant free hit Rules will be as follows:
13.1 Location of a free hit:
A. A free hit is taken close to where the offence occurred. ‘Close to’ means within playing distance of where the offence occurred and with no significant advantage gained. The location from which a free hit is taken must be more precise inside the 23metres area.
B. A free hit awarded within five metres of the circle to the attack is taken at the nearest point five metres from the circle.
C. A free hit awarded outside the circle to the defence within 15 metres of the back-line is taken up to 15 metres from the back-line in line with the location of the offence, parallel to the side-line.
D. A free hit awarded inside the circle to the defence is taken anywhere inside the circle or up to 15 metres from the back-line in line with the location of the offence, parallel to the side-line.
13.2 Procedures for taking a free hit, centre pass and putting the ball back into play after it has been outside the field:
A. The ball must be stationary.
B. Opponents must be at least five metres from the ball.
If an opponent is within five metres of the ball, they must not interfere with the taking of the free hit or must not play or attempt to play the ball. If this player is not playing the ball, attempting to play the ball or influencing play, the free hit need not be delayed.
C. When a free hit is awarded to the attack within the 23 metres area, all players other than the player taking the free hit must be at least 5 metres from the ball.
D. The ball is moved using a push or hit.
E. The ball must not be raised intentionally directly from the free hit.
F. If the player taking the free hit is the next player to play the ball, the actions of taking the free hit and of next playing the ball must be two separate actions.
G. Before another player of the team which took the free hit is allowed to play the ball, the ball must move at least one metre.
The ball does not have to move 1 metre before the player taking the free hit may play the ball again.
H. From a free hit awarded to the attack within the 23 metres area, the ball must not be played into the circle until it has travelled at least 5 metres or has been touched by a player of either team other than the player taking the free hit.
