Dr Ravinder Chadha retires
by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
Chandigarh, March 31
Dr Ravindra Chadha, Director, Medical Services, Haryana Power Utilities retires today on getting the age of superannuation after rendering 33 years commendable services. He had joined the erstwhile Haryana State Electricity Board in 1975 as Medical Officer. The medical service in the HSEB was limited to only consultancy when he had joined.
The credit of streamlining medical facilities vis-à-vis consultation, free medicines, laboratory facility and reimbursement goes to Dr.Chadha. Reimbursement claims were readily settled (at par with P.G.I. rates) in cases of treatment taken during emergencies from Private Hospitals. His proposal regarding full reimbursement to the employees who meet with non fatal accident while on duty (even if the treatment is taken from a private hospital) was appreciated by all the employees unions.
Keeping in view the services rendered by Dr. Chadha in the Board he was promoted as Chief Medical Officer. Later he was elevated to the post of Director, Medical Services, catering to all the four Haryana Power Corporations. The Medical facility rendered is much as compared to many Electricity Boards.
He led the Haryana cricket Ranji Trophy team for 18 years. He also led the Haryana State Electricity Board Team which won many Inter State Electricity Board’s Championships. In view of his outstanding performance the State awarded him with the Bhim Award. JAIPUR, March 20
Braving fierce winds and tough competition from his playing partner, Rashid Khan came through to bag the LG Rambagh Golf Club Open Amateur Championship by four strokes. He shot a round of two-under 68 to aggregate three-under 277 over the four rounds.
The win also ensured Rashid finished the year as the number one amateur on the LG Amateur Tour, winning four of the six tournaments he entered this season.
Local lad Amanjyot Singh had to be content with a second place finish as he returned a card of even-par 70 to end at one-over 281 for the tournament. SK Lakra shot his first under-par round of the week to finish in sole third place.
Jasjeet Singh, playing in the leader group, got off to a hot start but by the time he made the turn, he ran out of steam and finished four-over for the day, tied for fourth-place along with Arshdeep Tiwana and Ashbeer Saini
Rashid, starting off in the rain, got his round going immediately, making a birdie after his approach shot from the fairway landed four-feet from the pin. Amanjyot matched him for most of the front-nine and the two made the turn just the way they started, only two strokes separating them.
The Delhi lad went on to consolidate his position and just when it looked like he would run away with the title, two back-to-back bogeys put Amanjyot back in contention. But, the 18-year-old steadied himself and made birdies on the last two holes to secure the win.
An elated Rashid later said, “I had no idea that I would finish number one. I am really excited about that. This year I did not get to play many tournaments but next year I intend to play all the tournaments on the amateur circuit.”
Talking about his round today, he said, “It got a little tight towards the end but I was in control of my game and despite the bogeys I knew that I would be able to capitalise on the two par-5 holes in the end.”
Amanjyot Singh, who couldn’t quite repeat last year’s showing, said, “It is disappointing not to have won but I am happy with the way I played. I played consistent golf through all four days and I am satisfied with that.”
In the end, it was Rashid’s experience of winning multiple tournaments that saw him bag another title and overcome amanjyot’s challenge.
Scores: 277: Rashid Khan (71,69,69,68), 281:Amanjyot Singh(70,70,71,70); 282: Lt Col S K Lakra (70,72,71,69); 287: Jasjeet Singh(73,72,68,74); 287: Arshdeep Tiwana (74,68,73,72); 287: Ashbeer Singh Saini (70,71,73,73); 288: Tarun Ghogale (72,76,67,73); 289: Pawan Kumar(73,69,76,71); 290: Karan Vasudeva (70,78,69,73); 290: Lakhan Singh (73,73,69,75); 291: Samaresh Sardar (71,73,73,74); 291: Angad Cheema (66,74,73,78); 292: Col Ajay Singh (70,75,73,74).

Gurgaon, March 18
SSP Chowrasia and Shamim Khan carded rounds of six under 66 to be the highest placed Indians after round one of the US$ 300,000 SAIL Open 2009 being played at the Classic Golf Resort, Gurgaon. Chowrasia and Khan are tied sixth at the moment as they trail the leader, Chapchai Nirat of Thailand by four strokes.
Nirat produced a breathtaking 10 under 62, a course record, in the opening round of the SAIL Open 2009 to be the clubhouse leader after the morning session. The 25-year-old from Bangkok sank ten birdies, five each on the front nine and back nine to set the pace at the second edition of the SAIL Open.
Filipino Antonio Lascuna, Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat, Singapore’s Mardan Mamat and Mark Purser of New Zealand are three strokes behind Nirat in tied second place.
Kolkata’s SSP Chowrasia made a few good 10 feet putts on the front nine that resulted in two birdies and a good save. He then made the turn at two under after three birdies and a lone bogey. On the back nine Chowrasia came up with some exceptional chip-putts that helped him sink four more birdies.
Chowrasia said, “I made a couple of important birdie putts from 10 feet on the seventh and ninth today and that really got me going for the rest of the round. The course is playing really well and we could be in for a very low score this week. I feel comfortable on this course as I have won here in the past after having shot a nine under.”
Shamim Khan joined Chowrasia in tied sixth with a bogey-free 66. He had a solid start, knocking down four birdies on his first nine after teeing-off from the 10th. The Delhi golfer then consolidated on his second nine by sinking two more birdies.
“I couldn't have asked for a better start. I hit it close all day today and made a crucial 15 feet putt for birdie on the 15th. The course is not very difficult to negotiate since there is no rough or wind but one needs to focus on putting. My guess is that the winning score could go up to 20 or 22 under,” said Shamim.
Richard Moir of Australia made it a three-way tie for sixth place (along with Chowrasia and Shamim) when he returned a 66.
Indians Rafiq Ali Mollah, Rahil Gangjee, Ashok Kumar, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Naman Dawar fired identical scores of 67 to share ninth position.
Jyoti Randhawa, the highest ranked Indian in the field, lies tied 76th having returned a one under 71.

Border Security Force just managed to prevail over defending champions Punjab Police by an aggregate 8-7 margin in the sudden death tie-breaker after sharing four goals in the regulated 70-minute session of the 57th All-India Police Hockey Championship organized by the Chandigarh Police at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today.
Even the regular tie-breaker session could not resolve the deadlock as the teams were tied 4-all. The sudden death tie-breaker rule was applied to resolve the stalemate. Vikramjit Singh and Harbhajan Singh converted their strokes to clinch the issue in their favour of BSF. Drag flicker Jugraj Singh of Punjab Police converted it with an accurate and powerful push but his captain international Kanwalpreet Singh’s stroke was too weak to beat BSF goalkeeper KM Subbmah.
Earlier, in the tie-breaker session, BSF’s scorers were: Varinderjit Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Sharanjit Singh and Sushil Kumar. Raj Singh muffed his stroke as his gentle push was saved by substitute Punjab Police goalkeeper Baljit Singh.
In the stipulated session, the final started on a brisk note as the teams scored two goals in the first four minutes. BSF captain Harbhajan Singh stunned Punjab Police, captain by international midfielder Kanwalpreet Singh, by scoring a goal in the second minute. Punjab Police retaliated in the fourth minute and Kanwalpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to place his team at par. They forced another penalty corner and this time Jugraj Singh displayed his skill to convert the penalty corner with a sizzling drag flick in the 25th minute.
BSF were lucky as they restored parity in the 35th minute when they were awarded a penalty corner and Varinderjit Singh grabbed the opportunity to sound the board to get loud cheers from their supporters who turned up in a large number.
Both teams had a number of opportunities to score but could not take advantage of these chances. In the 55th minute, Amit Singh sprinted on the right flank before squaring the ball to Satwinder Singh whose reverse shot on the run went wide. Two minutes later, BSF retaliated when M Lakra gave a through pass to Mandeep Singh Sr failed to connect it.
Punjab Police pressed hard and forced two penalty corners in succession in the 59th minute. However, BSF first runner B Guria first foiled Jugraj Singh and then Kanwalpreet Singh.
BSF had a golden opportunity to wrap up the match just before the hooter. Sharanjit Singh sent a measured pass to Harbhjan Singh who had an open goal in front but he delayed and was dispossessed.
With teams tied 2-all, extra time of 15 minutes could not fail to break the dispute and the organizers applied the tie-breaker rule to decide the winners.
Earlier, in a Hard Line match, Central Industrial Security Force outplayed Haryana Police by 7-3. CISF scored through Compal Lakra (2), Bharat Kumar, Mangra Munda, Cyril Ekka, G Bala Krishanan and Ravinder Singh (1 each). Haryana Police reduced the margin through Parveen Kumar, Sardara Singh and Sandeep Kumar (1 each).
Maharashtra Police will take home the Fair Play Trophy.
Punjab Governor Gen (Retd) SF Rodrigues was the chief guest and distributed the prizes. He was received by Chandigarh Inspector General of Police and chairman of Organising Committee SK Jain, DIG Mahabir Singh, SSP SS Srivastava, SP (Security and Traffic) and HS Doon, SP (Operation) RS Ghumman.

The title-clash between the traditional rivals will be played at 2.45 p.m.
Both finalists recorded thumping victories in their semi-final matches played today. Border Security Force handed out a 5-0 drubbing to favourites Haryana Police after a goalless first session. Scorers for BSF were Mandeep Singh Senior (3, hat-trick), Varinderjit Singh (1) and Parkash Kerketta (1).
Punjab Police outplayed Central Industrial Security Force by 5-1 . Scorers for Punjab Police were: Satwinder (2), Kanwalpreet Singh (2) and Amit Singh. Compal Lakra (1) reduced the margin for CISF.
Former India captain Kanwalpreet Singh marshaled his players efficiently as the new-look Punjab Police dominated the proceedings. Satwinder Singh put Punjab Police ahead in the 10th minute. Jaskaran Singh sent a defence-splitting parallel pass from the right flank to Satwinder Singh inside the circle. CISF goalkeeper Bhushan Kumar partially cleared it and Satwinder Singh pounced on the rebound and rolled the ball into the goal.
Kanwalpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 23rd minute with a powerful drag flick. Maintaining their pressure, Punjab Police made it 3-0 with Satwinder Singh scoring a fine field goal. The winners crossed over with a 3-0 lead in the first half.
Kanwalpreet converted another penalty corner in the 43rd minute. Despite four goals down, CISF did not abjectly surrender. They initiated few good moves and their efforts were rewarded in the 59th minute when Compal Lakra reduced the margin.
Just three minutes before the hooter, Amit Singh sounded the boards to seal the fate of CISF.
Chandigarh Hockey Association president Additional Director General of Police, Punjab, Chandersekhar, was the chief guest. He was introduced to the Punjab Police and CISF players..
Earlier, a brilliant second-half hat-trick by Mandeep Singh Senior helped Border Security Force outplay a disorganized Haryana Police. Mahavir today got a yellow card in the 25th minute and in earlier matches, he was given one yellow and one green. Yogesh received a green card in the 14th minute and earlier encounters, Yogesh was given two green cards.
Tournament Director Satinder Singh Walia clarified that on the basis of their ‘mercy’ appeal, Yogesh has been allowed to play tomorrow.
Haryana Police were off-colour against inspired Border Security Force. The first half was a dull and drab affair. It ended in a goalless draw. However, on resumption Border Security Force reorganized their game and their players played their hearts out.
The player who held the spotlight was Mandeep Singh Senior with his outstanding performance. He completed his three-in-a-row feat within a span of seven minutes. He started chasing his hat-trick with a field goal in the 40th minute to open the account for the securitymen. BSF forced two penalty corners and Mandeep Singh Senior converted these in the 42nd and 47th minutes to complete his feat.
BSF kept on their relentless pressure and scored two more field goals to complete Haryana’s unexpected rout. In the 59th minute Varinderjit Singh caught the Haryana Police defence napping and six minutes later Parkash Kerketta rounded of the winners’ tally.
BSF were awarded five penalty corners while Haryana failed to enforce even a single one.

Panchkula (Haryana), March 15
Kapurthala-based Gaganjeet Bhullar’s long wait for his first professional win finally came to an end when he posted a superb seven under 65 on the final day of the PGTI Players Championship presented by Panchkula Golf Club. The 20-year-old from Kapurthala won by a mammoth margin of seven strokes as he totaled 19 under 269 for the tournament. Bhullar has now become the youngest winner on the PGTI and has also climbed from 38th position to fourth on the PGTI Order of Merit.
Chandigarh’s Harendra Gupta and Vijay Kumar of Lucknow finished in tied second place with an identical total of 12 under 276. Harmeet Kahlon, another Chandigarh golfer, was fourth since his overall score read eight under 280.
Gaganjeet Bhullar (65, 73, 66, 65) registered his breakthrough win as a professional with a clinical 65 that was highlighted by eight birdies and a lone bogey. He began the day as the joint leader along with Vijay Kumar but soon raced ahead as a result of birdies on the first and third.
Bhullar never looked back after that and continued to consolidate on his brilliant start. The effect of a bogey on the fourth was negated by the birdie on the very next hole. Gaganjeet picked up the pace on the back nine, sinking birdies with ease on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th.
Harendra Gupta (71, 69, 68, 68) came up with a fighting 68 to post a tied second finish. He produced five birdies against a lone bogey in the final round. He was two strokes behind Vijay Kumar after the 17th but he made a spectacular birdie on the final hole by converting a 20 feet putt from the edge of the green while Vijay missed a four-footer for par. Vijay Kumar (72, 68, 64, 72), thus shared second place along with Gupta.
Vijay Kumar on the other hand, had an ordinary round after breaking the course record the previous day. In round four he made four birdies and four bogeys for a 72. Harmeet Kahlon (71, 72, 68, 69) of Chandigarh secured fourth place since he was four strokes adrift of the joint runners-up. He totaled eight under 280.
Chandigarh golfers Sujjan Singh and Gurbaaz Mann shared fifth place at seven under 281 along with last year’s Order of Merit champion Mukesh Kumar and Bangladesh’s Mohd Siddikur Rahman.
Ashok Kumar was tied 14th at two under 286 while Gaurav Ghei totaled one over 289 to be placed tied 21st. Mukesh Kumar continues to the lead the 2009 PGTI Order of Merit.
