CFH Academy rout Imperial College

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
CHANDIGARH, JUNE 30

The Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy (CFHA), a venture of the Chandigarh Administration, handed out a 13-3 drubbing to Imperial College, London, in a hopelessly one-sided boys exhibition hockey match played at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. Gagandeep pumped in four goals, including a hat-trick, while Kanwaldeep netted three. The winners had established a commanding 4-1 lead at half time.
The CHFH Academy meant business from the word go. After wasting a penalty corner in the third minute, they forged ahead in the sixth minute with skipper Gurjinder converting a penalty corner. The state-run academy won another penalty corner three minutes later but it was wasted. The CFHA doubled their lead in the 14th minute when Gagandeep opened his individual account through an excellent field goal (2-0). For the next 11 minutes the match belonged to Gagandeep as he scored two more scintillating field goals in the 19th and 25th minutes, respectively, to make it 4-0 and complete his three-in-a-row feat.

The visting team reorganised their game and in the 29th minute Ewan Quince pulled one back through a field goal (4-1). At the start of the second half half Kanwaldeep trapped the ball neatly just inside the striking circle and hammered it home to make it 5-1.

On crossing over, the Chandigarh boys started dictated terms in an even more dominating manner, which further demoralized a ‘at the end of their wits’ English team. Kanwaldeep again caught the Imperial College defence sleeping and scored his second goal and the team’s sixth in the 35th minute (6-1). With this strike the floodgates virtually opened and the CFHA’s Gurjant made it 7-1 with an excellent individual effort in the 38th minute. In the 39th minute the local lads won a penalty corner but it went a begging. Gagandeep scored his fourth in the 45th minute (8-1). A minute later Kanwaldeep dodging past two defenders and sold a dummy to the goalkeeper and put the ball into the goal mouth to make it 9-1.
Bikramjeet and Damandeep also got on the score sheet when they scored goals in the 56th and 56th minutes (11-1) to end the visiting team’s misery.
In the second match which was played under lights, the CFHA girls thrashed their counterparts from Imperial College by 11-0. Sandeep scored three fine field goals while Shivani, Ritu, Reena sounded the board twice each. Jyoti and Jayanti scored one goal each.

Coimbatore, June 26

Abhishek Jha of Bangalore fired a 3-under 69 in the final round of the LG Tamil Nadu Open to register his first victory in the current season of the LG Indian Amateur Tour at the Coimbatore Golf Club here on Friday. He finished with a level-par card of 72 for a four-day total of 297.
Rahul Bajaj finished third at 300 while Pawan Kumar shared the fourth spot along with Karan Vasudeva at 304. Pritam Haridas was sixth at 305 while Moin Malak occupied the seventh spot at 307.
Playing some superb golf, the 22-year-old Abhishek flirted with birdies before finally nailing his first on the par-5 fifth. In fact he missed an eight-footer for an eagle. Staying at 1-under for the first eight holes, he swerved to the left on his drive on the par-5 ninth and paid the penalty as he eventually ended up with a bogey to take the turn at level par.
Meanwhile his nearest competitor Rashid Khan who had begun the day three shots behind Abhishek had no other way but to attack the pins if he wanted to catch up with the leader. He did attack the pins but was unfortunate not to make any birdies. In fact one such attempt earned him a bogey on the par-3 fourth. However he nullified it with a superb birdie on the par-5 fifth.
It was on the back nine that Abhishek did not leave any chance for his opponent as he made a hat-trick of birdies starting from the 11th with the birdie on the 12th satisfying him the most where he chipped in from 30 yards. Sitting pretty with a five shot lead, Abhishek then missed a 2-feet par putt on the par-3 14th. Meanwhile Rashid Khan too rallied with birdies on the 12th and 15th. But any chances of a real fight-back vanished on the par-3 16th where the Delhi lad made a double bogey, courtesy his tee shot which landed in the green side bunker. Although Abhishek swerved on his tee shots in the finishing holes, he made superb up and downs to save par and thus grab the title.
Top scores: (After 72 holes): 291 Abhishek Jha (BLR- 71, 77, 74, 69); 297 Rashid Khan (Del – 75, 75, 75, 72); 300 Rahul Bajaj (Noida- 79, 76, 73, 72); 304 Pawan Kumar (Del - 78, 74, 77, 75), Karan Vasudeva (Del – 78, 76, 73, 77); 305 Pritam Haridas (Blr – 78, 77, 74, 76); 307 Moin Malak (Pune – 79, 78, 76, 74); 308 Gagan Varma (Del – 72, 77, 83, 76), Jasjeet Singh (Noi da-74, 79, 77, 78), Samresh Sardar (Kol – 72, 78, 78, 80); 310 Siddarth Sharma (Jai – 75, 85, 72, 81); 312 C G Somaiah (Blr – 80, 80, 76, 76), Aditya Bhandarkar (Pune - 74, 74, 84, 80).

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
CHANDIGARH, JUNE 22

Jalandhar gained a crucial 34-run first-innings lead over Chandigarh on the second day of the four-day final of Punjab Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Katoch Shield being played at the PCA Stadium, in Mohali today.
Chandigarh received an early setback when their proflic scorer opener Sarul Kanwar, who had earlier hit three centuries in the tournament, was snapped up by wicketkeeper Abhishek while chasing a wayward delivery of medium pacer Amrinder Sodhi on an individual score of six and the team score reading 10.
The other opener skipper Vishwas Bhalla was joined by Amit Prashar. They carried the total 250 when Prashar was caught by Robin Singh of the bowling of medium pacer Navdeep Singh for 22. Gurkirat Walia joined his skipper and both took the total to 72 when Vishwas Bhalla was embroiled in a mix up with Gurkirat Walia and was brilliantly run out by Pargat Singh for 28. At this stage south paw Uday Kaul joined Gurkirat Walia and the duo stitched a fourth wicket partnership of 202 runs before Uday Kaul was adjudged leg before wicket to right arm leg spinner Rahul Sharma for a well made century (108) off 145 balls laced with 7x4s and a huge six .
Gurkirat Walia was joined by Anupam Gambhir and the two took the total to 323 and adding 45 runs for the fifth wicket before Gurkirat Walia holed out to Navdeep Singh in the deep while trying to hoist leg spinner Rahul Sharma out of the ground. Gurkirat Walia in the process scored a business like century 131 off 208 balls studded with 9x4s and a effortless six. Anupam Gambhir remained unbeaten on (4x4s). He was associated in a seventh wicket stand of 45 runs with Anshul Tripathi (25).
Chandigarh were sitting pretty at 384 for 7 in 89.2 overs when right arm leg spinner Rahul Sharma picked up three quick wickets and terminated the Chandigarh innings at 400 in 93.1 overs. Rahul Sharma who almost bowled unchanged during the innings returned flattering figures of 38.1 overs one maiden 165 runs and 6 wickets.
Earlier, Jalandhar had made 434 for 4 in 95 overs.
With a slender 34 runs first innings lead Jalandhar have a slight edge over Chandigarh but with full two days play still to come the final match holds exciting prospects for both the teams. An interesting feature of the Mohali wicket this has been the domination of batsman over bowlers unlike the earlier years when fast bowlers used to thrive on the Mohali track.
The match will resume tomorrow at 7.00 am.

Tiwana win LG Southern India Open

Arshdeep Tiwana receiving the winner’s trophy from RM Venkatesh, Branch Manager, LG electronics Ltd. KN Shanth Kumar, IGU Council member is also seen.
by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
Bangalore, June 19

Standing on the first tee box, all the three players in the lead group were thinking of how to secure their maiden title on the LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour. The 19-year-old Angad Cheema had the advantage of leading by two shots from his more experienced partner Karan Vasudeva while the third playing partner Arshdeep Tiwana was five shots behind the leader. However when the three finished their stipulated round, it was Arshdeep who managed to keep his cool on the last three holes to win the LG Southern India title by a shot.
Arshdeep ended the tournament with a four-day total of 7-over 295. Karan Vasudeva edged out Angad Cheema on a count-back to finish as the runner-up as both ended up with a similar total of 296. Gagan Verma was fourth at 297 while Moin Malak found his wonted form to shoot the day’s lowest of 2-under 70 and finished fifth at 298.
Oblivious to the situation, Arshdeep approached the final day in a clinical fashion making a birdie on the second. Parring his way, he saved another stroke on the difficult sixth. However, he three-putted on the seventh for a bogey to take the turn at 1-under for the day. Meanwhile Karan could not have asked for a better start making a birdie on the opening hole. However he lost his way in between and made bogeys on the second, fourth and eighth to be one-over. Angad too began in a similar fashion opening with a birdie but made five bogeys in the next eight holes (3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 9th) to fall way behind.
Arshdeep gave up his hope when he three-putted from three feet for a bogey on the 10th. However a perfect 6-iron tee shot on the 13th put him at 1-feet from the pin which he duly converted into a birdie. That renewed his confidence and as luck would have it, things changed on the 16th. While the Hyderabad lad was the only player to be on the fairway, while his competitors were in trouble on the right of the fairway and eventually ended up with a bogey apiece while Arshdeep managed a par and thus take a one-stroke lead. A similar story occurred on the penultimate hole which put the 22-year-old into a two-shot cushion with just a hole to go.
However Angad and Karan hit the green with the former being only five feet from the pin while Arshdeep was on the edge. Chipping to about six feet, Arshdeep missed his par putt. Karan too missed a long ranger. Cheema could have taken the match into a play-off by sinking the five-footer but destiny was on Arshdeep’s side as he tapped the bogey putt to win by a stroke.
Top scores (after 72 holes): 295 Arshdeep Tiwana (74, 76, 72, 73); 296 Karan Vasudeva (74, 70, 75, 77), Angad Cheema (73, 75, 69, 79); 297 Gagan Verma (74, 77, 72, 74); 298 Moin Malak (71, 82, 75, 70); 301 Abhijit Singh Chadha (78, 73, 75, 75); 302 Rahul Bakshi (79, 74, 70, 79); 303 Rashid Khan (72, 81, 75, 75); 304 Kanishk Madan (80, 75, 74, 75); 305 Raja Sardar (80, 78, 75, 72); 306 Samresh Sardar (76, 83, 70, 77), Abhishek Jha (79, 79, 72, 76), Simarjeet Singh (74, 77, 77, 78), Jasjeet Singh (78, 77, 78, 73)

Cheema hits the front at SI Open Amateur

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
Bangalore, June 18

Angad Cheema had sounded a warning yesterday after moving into the second position. But on Thursday, Angad, who began four shots behind the overnight leader, Karan Vasudeva, was sitting on a two-stroke lead with 18 holes to play, courtesy his superb round of 3-under 69 in the third round of the LG Southern India Amateur championship at the KGA Course. The Chandigarh lad had an aggregate of 1-over 217 after 54 holes.
Karan submitted a card of 75 to be placed second at 219 while Arshdeep Tiwana was third at 222. Arshdeep also hogged the limelight along with the leaders when he aced the par-3 eighth while returning a card of level par 72. Rahul Bakshi who shot the day’s second best score with a 2-under 70 is sharing the fourth spot along with Gagan Verma at 223. Abhijit Singh Chadha was sole sixth at 226 while Rahul Bajaj was placed seventh at 227. Top ranked Rashid Khan and opening day’s leader Moin Khan shot identical rounds of 75 to share the ninth spot at 228.
Angad’s round was laced with six birdies and three bogeys. Playing in the lead group for the first time ever, the 19-year-old did not show any chinks as he went about attacking the pins, which were easy compared to the first two days. Sinking a 20-footer for a birdie on the par-4 second, Angad ran into a bad patch where he made a hat-trick of bogeys beginning from the fourth.
However he overcame the setback in style when he made three consecutive birdies on the difficult par-5 ninth, the 10th and the par-4 12th, all courtesy his superb hitting backed by his hot putter. The 12th hole changed the scenario completely as Karan who was playing to level par until then and was leading by a shot, ended up with a poor driver shot. A bad lie didn’t help his cause and he ended up losing two strokes, which now put Angad into a one-shot lead after the latter’s birdie.
Showing good signs of maturity, Angad managed to keep his nerves in returning pars and converting a birdie on the 17th. Karan three-putted on the 14th to end up with a bogey to give his younger competitor a chance to widen the lead. Earlier, the Delhi lad had made two birdies on the fourth and seventh and an equal number of bogeys (7th and 9th) on his front nine.
Arshdeep’s ace: Arshdeep Tiwana, the 22-year-old lad from Hyderabad must have woken up on the correct side as he not only submitted a level par card to claw himself into contention for the title but also carded a hole-in-one on the difficult par-3 eighth. It was only in the club house that he realised that he had won a brand new TaylorMade golf set , courtesy TaylorMade India who have instituted the hole-in-one prize for the first player to ace the designated par-3 at every event on the LG Indian Amateur Tour.
Standing on the tee box of the 158-yard hole, Arshdeep faced some solid head wind and with a perfect 8-iron approach to the green, the ball pitched about 15 feet on the right and curled towards the pin before settling in the cup.
Top scores (after 54 holes): 217 Angad Cheema (73, 75, 69); 219 Karan Vasudeva (74, 70, 75); 222 Arshdeep Tiwana (74, 76, 72); 223 Rahul Bakshi (79, 74, 70), Gagan Verma (74, 77, 72); 226 Abhijit Singh Chadha (78, 73, 75); 227 Rahul Bajaj (74, 78, 75); 228 Moin Malak (71, 82, 75), Rashid Khan (72, 81, 75), Simarjeet Singh (74, 77, 77); 229 Samresh Sardar (76, 83, 70), Kanishk Madan (80, 75, 74); 230 Abhishek Jha (79, 79, 72); 231 Jaibir Singh (76, 80, 75)

BANGALORE, JUNE 17

Karan Vasudeva brought in the lone under-par card of 70 to jump into a four-shot lead at the half-way stage of the LG Southern India Amateur being played at the par-72 KGA Course here on Wednesday.
Overnight leader Moin Malak submitted a card of 10-over par 82 while tournament favourite Rashid Khan went 9-over 81 to slump to ninth position. Karan with a total of level par 144 was ahead of the second placed Angad Cheema who had a 36-hole total of 4-over 148.
Arshdeep Tiwana and Pawan Kumar were tied for the third place at 150 while three players – Simarjeet Singh, Gagan Verma and Abhijit Singh Chadha were sharing the fifth position at 151. With the course taking its toll, the cut was applied at 19-over 163.
Karan who is in a hunt for his maiden title on the LG Indian Amateur Tour began the day at his overnight total of 2-over 74. His formula of keeping it simple worked wonders as he began with consecutive birdies on the first two holes, courtesy his fine driving. But as things were going smooth for the 21-year-old, he hit the fairway bunker on the third from where he ended up with a bogey. However on the difficult par-5 fifth, the death knell for many a golfer, the Delhi lad laid it up to avoid the slope and chipped to 20 feet. Trying to make a par, he sank the testy putt for a birdie. Missing the green on the seventh, Karan lost a stroke and parred his way to take the turn at 1-under.
On the back nine, Karan made missed an eagle from 25 feet after a driver-3 wood approach but managed to birdie the hole. As the hitting improved, so was his confidence as he birdied the next hole too. Playing on a testing course like the KGA, he was well on his way to home with a 3-under card but for a mistake on the par-4 17th where he pulled his drive and was forced to chip out before approaching the green. Eventually he lost a shot and had to be content with a round of 70.
Meanwhile, Cheema who has graduated to the Amateur Tour about couple of years ago has not had many outings on the Tour. The 19-year-old who has recently shifted to Chandigarh played a see-saw round while making a bogey on the fifth while following it up with a birdie on the next. A duffed chip on the ninth resulted in a double bogey but he was quick to save a stroke on the very next hole. Another bogey followed on the par-3 13th and a birdie on the 15th. With a bogey each on the last two holes, saw the lanky lad occupy the second positon.

Jeev leads Asian Tour charge at US Open

bysportswire4u.blogspot.com
Sentosa, June 16

India’s Jeev Milkha Singh is battling time as he prepares to lead a strong Asian Tour cast at the US Open this week with the aim of delivering Asia’s first major title.
The year’s second major starts at Bethpage State Park’s Black course in New York from Thursday and joining Singh will be Angelo Que of the Philippines and Korean trio K.J. Choi, Bae Sang-moon and Charlie Wi.
Asian Tour honorary member Vijay Singh of Fiji will also be in the elite field.
It will be a walk down memory lane for Jeev, the reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion as he made his major debut at the US Open at the same venue back in 2002.
However, the 37th ranked player in the world will have to shrug off a rib injury he picked up during the recent Celtic Manor Wales Open where he finished a commendable joint sixth.
The Indian, who has been drawn alongside his namesake Vijay Singh and Choi, will decide on Wednesday night if he is fit enough to compete in the US Open.
After missing the cut at the US Masters in April by one stroke, Jeev will be determined to win his fitness race and compete in the US Open where world number one Tiger Woods is the title holder.
His form has been solid with two recent top-10s in Europe while he was also fourth at the WGC-CA Championship in Doral, USA earlier this season.
The immensely talented Choi, who is an Asian Tour honorary member, is also expected to sparkle at Bethpage. The powerful Korean has come close to winning Asia’s first major on several occasions where he finished third at the Masters Tournament in 2004 and was the halfway leader at the British Open last year before finishing tied 16th.
Choi endured a slow start to his season, posting only one top-10 at the Northern Trust Open where he finished joint third but he showed a welcome return to form at the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago by placing 13th.
Que, last year’s Philippine Open champion, and Bae, a three-time winner on the Asian Tour, will make their US Open debuts and take their places alongside the world’s best players after a successful qualifying campaign in Japan.
Que finished second to qualify for his second major test while big-hitting Bae, winner of the GS Caltex Maekyung Open in May, was third in the qualifiers.
Wi, a seven-time winner on the Asian Tour and a regular on the US PGA Tour, earned his US Open place after topping his sectional qualifying in California.
Vijay, a three-time major champion, will aim to roll back the years as he contests for the prestigious US Open title. Vijay is living testament that age is no barrier as the 46-year-old Fijian claimed three titles last year on the PGA Tour.
Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han believes that the Asian Tour stars will be gunning for glory at the US Open. He said Asian golf has improved over the years which is reflected by the strong Asian Tour presence at the US Open.
“The growth of professional golf in Asia has been evident over the past few years that our players have consistently shown great performances on the international stage. We have a very strong line-up of players at the US Open and I have every confidence they will compete with the sole intention of achieving success,” said Han.

After battling tough conditions in Coimbatore, junior golfers get ready to face off in the Lalit Suri Northern India Junior Golf Championship at the Panchkula Golf Club here from June 16 to 19.
The field has been given a boost with the top juniors present in full strength. Kapurthala’s Ashbeer Singh Saini will be gunning for his second straight title on tour after registering a facile two-shot win in Coimbatore two weeks back.

Fourteen-year-old Vashsist Pawar and Vidit Singh would start as favourites in category ‘B’ and ‘C’ respectively. Chikka wins battle of nerves

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
BANGALORE, JUNE 13

In what turned out to be a thrilling contest between two of the most talented youngsters, the younger of them, Chikkarangappa, held his nerves to win his maiden title on the LG Indian Amateur Golf Tour. In the final round played at Eagleton The Golf Resort here on Friday, it all boiled down to the final hole where Chikka, hit a brilliant second shot under pressure to maintain a slender one-shot lead and win the LG Karnataka Open title.
Chikka finished the tournament with a commendable total of 9-under 279 while Rashid had to be content with a bridesmaid finish at 278. Chandigarh lad Rahul Bakshi shot the best round of the day at 4-under and finished third overall with a tally of 5-under 283. Citymate Abhijit Singh Chadha ended up fourth with a total of 288 while Kanishk Madan was fifth at 289. Khalin Joshi with a total of 290 was a stroke better than his experienced citymate Abhishek Jha to finish sixth.
It was a determined Chikka who called the first shots when he made a birdie on the opening hole while Rashid fumbled with an 8-footer birdie putt that helped Chikka go two strokes ahead. Rashid once again missed a birdie on the second from five feet. With luck not riding with him, Rashid preferred to save par rather than lose strokes.
On the other hand, Chikka made four more birdies on the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 9th while losing a stroke each on the 5th and 7th to take the turn at 10-under, three ahead of Rashid. However with bogeys on the par-3 12th and the easy par-4 14th Chikka was back to a solitary stroke lead. With both players going hammer and tongs, drama unfolded in the last two holes. Rashid unleashed a superb tee shot on the 17th which left him four feet short of the cup. Chikkas tee shot was just over and his 25-feet curling downhill putt lipped out. Rashid lost a golden opportunity to square after missing the almost given birdie putt.
Once again on the 18th, Chikkas second shot was just a couple feet away from the cup. Rashid almost holed it on his second. Both of them signed off with birdies as the status quo remained for Chikka to lay his hands on his maiden title on the senior Tour.
I am delighted to win my first amateur title on my home course in front of my well wishers, said a delighted Chikka. I think the penultimate hole was crucial. Had Rashid made the putt, I think it would have been a different story. But I was confident of pulling it off, said the champion who intends to concentrate on the Junior Tour.
Playing in the same group but oblivious to the duos battle, young Rahul Bakshi played a bogey-free round while making birdies on the 1st, 6th, 16th and 18th.

It seemed a renewal of rivalry between Rashid Khan and Chikkarangappa, who used to face each other oftenin the battle for honours in the junior circuit. Behind by six shots, Rashid played an almost flawless round of golf, shooting five-under 67 to claw back into contention, at the end of the penultimate round of the LG Karnataka Open being held at the par-72 Eagleton - The Golf Resort here on Thursday. Chikkarangappa despite an average round of level-par 72, had a three-day total of seven-under 209 with Rashid breathing down his neck at 210.
The duo had left the rest of the field far behind as Rahul Bakshi who also submitted a level par round was a distant third at 215. 17-year-old Chandigarh lad Abhijit Singh Chadha also fired a 5-under 67 to be placed fourth at 217 along with Bangalores Abhishek Jha and Delhis Kanishk Madan. Another local lad who has improved by leaps and bounds, Khalin Joshi, was placed seventh at 218. Abhinav Lohan was sole eighth at 222.
Although Rashid has graduated to the senior ranks, Chikka has another couple of years on the junior circuit. However, their healthy rivalry was on display as Rashid began aggressively right from the opening hole and succeeded in saving a stroke with a deft chip. The lead was restored by Chikka when he made a birdie on the second but his quest to build on the lead in a hurry, cost him dearly as he lost a stroke each on the third and seventh. To add to that Rashid made a birdie on the par-3 eighth to narrow the lead even further.
Making the turn at 1-over, Chikka soon found himself in trouble again on the par-3 12th where he three-putted from the centre of the green. The 16-year-old managed to salvage his pride by making two birdies in the last three holes (16th and 18th). Nothing went right for me today. I was just off-colour in all department of the game. However I am happy to get away with an even par round despite my indifferent form today, admitted Chikka. I know he is an experienced player and if he wins, it would be because of his good form, he added.
Rashid, despite hitting only seven greens in regulation on his front nine, took the turn at 2-under. Such was his form that he did not miss any of the greens in regulation on his return journey. After a birdie on the par-5 13th, the Delhi lad upped his game and made consecutive birdies on the 16th and 17th and saved a great par on the 18th to be home and dry with a score that should give Chikka a restless night.
I had planned to catch up with him and not really overtake him as six shots was a bit too much, said Rashid. I am looking forward to one more title but Chikka is also a good player. I need to play a steady game and I am aware that he is playing on his home course.
Top scores (after 54 holes): 209 Chikkarangappa (68, 69,72); 210 Rashid Khan (74, 69, 67); 215 Rahul Bakshi (71, 72, 72); 217 Abhijit Singh Chadha (75, 75, 67), Abhishek Jha (73, 72, 72), Kanishk Madan (70, 75, 72); 218 Khalin Joshi (74, 72, 72); 222 Abhinav Lohan (75, 71, 76); 223 L Selvadurai (76, 74, 73), HS Kang (76, 73, 74), Bhawani Singh (77, 72, 74)

Marathon innings by skipper Pawn Jha

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
PANCHKULA, June 9
A superb marathon knock of 175 off just 135 balls which included 24 boundaries and one six by opener Pawan Kumar Jha and another magnificient innings of 90 runs by Dipanshu Rajanwal enabled Panchkula District to overpower Kurukshetra District by a huge margin of 162 runs in the Haryana State Inter District (Under 22) Cricket Championship, played at JR Institute of Cricket Technology, (Barwala), Panchkula here today.
Afrer winning the toss, panchkula skipper Kapil Pandey opeted to bat first and the decision was proved to be right from the very first over of the innings as Pawan Jha continued in the fashion he left in the last match and scored 14 runs from the very first over of the innings bowled by medium pacer Harjot SIngh.
Although Panchkula District lost 2 early wickets in the form of Naveen Bhaloda and Ravi Kumar with the scoreboard reading just 23 runs, Pawan Jha accompanied by Dipanshu Rajanwal had other ideas who registered 50 of the innings in just 7th over and thereafter continued to score at will. Pawan Jha was more devastating of the two hitting the bowlers mercilessly all around the wicket as second 50 of the innings came much quicker in just 37 balls and the scoreboard read 100 for 2 in 12.4 overs.
Kuruksehrra's skipper tried his best changing the bowlers but none of them could put brake on the brisk scoring rate as replacement of Amit proved more constlier when Jaijagpal came in and the very first ball was pulled over square leg fence for a six. Pawan completed his Century in just 82 balls, which included a six and 16 boundaries, whereas on the other end, Dipanshu, however, started cautiously but opened up and was matching ball to ball with the other partner reaching his half century with 6 hits to the fence.
Once Pawan Jha completed his centurty and Dipanshu crossed 50 runs mark, both became more harsh and launched a brutal attack with Pawan going on to 175 runs in jjst 135 balls and Dipanshu Rajanwal had scored 90 of 99 balls before he was hit-wicket to off spinner Anshul in another attempt to sent the ball over mid-wicket fence.
But by then both were involved in 242 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. After the fall of 3rd wicket, Panchkula lost anotehr few wickets in quick succession but Mohan SIngh ensured alongwith Pawan Jha that the brilliant start is captialised to its optimum while playing a brisk knock of 35 runs off just 21 deliveries. Mrigank was the most successful boweler for Kuruksetra team with figures of 4 for 50 whereas Anshul and Harjot accounted for 2 wickets each. Panchkula innings folded at 345 for 9 in the allotted 50 overs.

Facing a hurculian start, visitor started chase on a sedate note, scoring 36 runs in 7 overs but in the process, lost both the openers to medium pacer Kapil Pandey. An in-swinging delivery from Kapil was a beauty which sent the middle stump rolling almost 10 yards from its groove. It was Deepak Negi who put some resistance scoring 49 runs with the help of 5 four and a six off 63 balls and Harjot 24 off 25 balls but that was not enough. At no stage, Kurukshetra Team looked in race who were all out at 183 in 37.5 overs. The dual Left arm spin attack from Sachin Gehrotra and Mohan Singh knit a web cleverly not only restricting the run rate but picking up wickets at regular intervals. Mohan SIngh claimed 4 for 32 whereas Kapil Pandey chipped in 2 for 39 and Sachin Gehrotra with Himmat SIngh claimed one wicket apiece. Panchkula won the match by huge margin of 162 runs and reached the quarterfinal to face Chandigarh to be played at Chandigarh on 11th June, 2009.
Brief scores: Panchkula District: 345 for 9 in 50 overs (Pawan Jha 175, Dipanshu Rajanwal 90, Mohan Singh 35 N.O. Mrigank 4 for 50, Harjot 2 for 82).
