Keeping in view the outstanding performance as Sports Director since his joining the Punjab Sports Directorate in 2005, the Punjab Government has given extension to Padam Shree and Arjuna Awardee Pargat Singh, up to September 19, 2010.
The extension order has been issued by Secretary Sports P S Aujla, IAS, on August 26, 2009.
During his four-year tenure as Sports Director, Olympian Pargat Singh has achieved many firsts. The most creditable achievement is manifold increase in budget of the Punjab Sports Department. Under Plan, the budget has been hiked to Rs 23 crore from Rs one crore. Under the Non-Plan, it has been raised to Rs 25.45 crore from Rs 9.12 crore.
Organization of the first-ever Four-Nation Punjab Gold Cup Hockey Tournament featuring the top hockey playing countries is another important achievement of the Punjab Government.
With paucity of coaches and supporting staff due to retirement and no replacements, Pargat Singh took the initiative and convinced the Punjab Government the need for appointment of coaches, ministerial and supporting staff. Out of 245 new appointments, 169 coaches have been recruited. It became more significant since creation of more districts.
Born on March 5, 1965, at Mithapur near Jalandhar Cantonment, Pargat Singh, who captained Indian hockey teams in 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1996 Atlanta Olympics has efficiently strengthened the base at grass root level by paying special attention to the sports wing scheme. On his initiative and full government support, strength of sports wing seats has been increased to 4,000 from a meager 300. The trainees are recruited after proper spotting and various trials. The number of centres has gone up to 250 from just three.
On deputation from the Punjab Police, Pargat Singh’s another appreciable achievement is revival of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh award. In 2006, 124 outstanding sportspersons of Punjab were awarded the highest state sports award.
The Punjab Government also felicitated Punjab sportspersons who brought glory to the country and the state by winning medals in the 2006 Doha Asian Games, Asia Cup, Melbourne Commonwealth Games and World Cup Shooting Championship
Thanking the Punjab Government for recognizing and appreciating his services as a Sports Director by giving him extension, a modest Pargat Singh said “I am committed to sincerely implement the progressive sports schemes of the Punjab Government. I am getting full supports from all.”

The 44-year-old from Mhow golfer bagged his third Aircel PGTI title of the year, having totaled 13 under 267 for the week. This was also Mukesh’s seventh title win on the Aircel PGTI as he had four wins in the last season. He now has the record for the maximum number of wins on the tour.
Lucknow’s Vijay Kumar finished second at 11 under 269 while Shamim Khan and Digvijay Singh shared third place at eight under 272. Mukesh Kumar (65, 65, 66, 71) began his title defence in conservative fashion as his putting form seemed to desert him on the front nine. He made pars on the first eight holes and then missed a two-footer to bogey the ninth. The PGTI Order of Merit champion from 2007-08 went two over for the day when he missed a five feet putt on the 11th to drop yet another bogey.

Mukesh had a good par save on the 17th which sealed the title for him. On the 17th, he recovered well from the bunker and made a tricky four feet downhill putt for par.
Vijay Kumar (68, 68, 67, 66) birdied the third, sixth, eighth and bogeyed the fourth and fifth to make the turn at one under. He then made a charge on the back nine, firing four consecutive birdies from the 11th to the 14th. Vijay sank some long putts on this stretch and became the joint leader along with Mukesh at 12 under after the 14th.
Vijay’s title hopes were dashed on the 15th, where he found the rough and had to take a penalty drop that resulted in a bogey.
Vijay has now climbed from fourth to third on the Aircel PGTI Order of Merit.
Shamim Khan (67, 65, 72, 68) and Digvijay Singh (65, 70, 68, 69) shared third place at eight under 272.

Mukesh Kumar fired his second consecutive 65 on Thursday to lead the PGTI – 125th Year Madras Gymkhana Club Tamil Nadu Open 2009 by two strokes. Mukesh, currently second on the Aircel PGTI Order of Merit, now has a two-day total of 10 under 130. Shamim Khan is two strokes behind the leader in second place.
The cut was applied at four over 144. Fifty-three professionals and two amateurs made the cut.
Mukesh Kumar (65, 65) was quick off the blocks in round two as he sank an eagle on the 600-yard par five third. On the third hole, he found the edge of the green with his second shot (3-wood) and then knocked down a 15 feet uphill putt for eagle. He then converted putts from 10 feet and 15 feet to earn birdies on the seventh and 10th respectively.
A top-class six iron approach shot on the 12th set up a 15 feet eagle putt for Mukesh. But the reigning Aircel PGTI Order of Merit champion, could only pick up a birdie on the 12th as he missed the 15-footer for eagle.
Shamim Khan (67, 65) too capped an exceptional round to be placed second. He made eagle on the par five 12th, where he holed a 25 feet putt after hitting the green in two. A birdie on the 14th meant Shamim made the turn at three under.
On the second nine, the Delhi golfer converted some very long putts ranging from 25 to 45 feet, to pick up birdies on the second, seventh and ninth. His lone bogey on the sixth came as a result of missing an up and down from the bunker.

Om Prakash Chouhan (72, 64) of Mhow drained six birdies on Thursday to post the best score of round two. His six under 64 placed him tied fifth at four under 136 along with Vijay Kumar, C Muniyappa and Rudresh Sharma. The 22-year-old Chouhan, a disciple of Mukesh Kumar, had five consecutive birdies from the 10th to the 14th on day two.
