Anirban Lahiri putts maiden professional title

PANCHKULA, SEPT 27

Anirban Lahiri posted a steady 69 in the final round of the Aircel-PGTI’s Haryana Open 2009 presented by HUDA and DLF to bag his maiden professional title. Lahiri totaled 10 under 278 for the tournament to finish one stroke ahead of C Muniyappa at the challenging Panchkula Golf Club on Sunday. Bangalore-based Lahiri thus took home the winner’s cheque of Rs. 4,84,950 to climb from fourth to third on the Aircel-PGTI Order of Merit for 2009.
Anirban Lahiri (69, 69, 71, 69) picked up a birdie on the very first hole, helped by a top-class drive and an equally good chip shot from the front edge of the green. The 22-year-old, who was tied fourth after round three, raised his title hopes after he birdied the seventh. Lahiri was in the joint lead along with Mandeo Singh Pathania at the turn as Harendra Gupta, the overnight leader slipped down the leaderboard due to his poor run on the front nine.
Lahiri added two more birdies to his card on the 10th and 12th to become the sole leader. He made a good 15 feet putt for birdie on the 12th and followed that up with a 12-footer for par on the 13th. The Asian Tour regular found the trees with his tee shot on the 16th but recovered well with two left-handed shots to make a bogey on that hole. He then pulled it left on the final hole but made a good recovery yet again with a great second shot (seven iron) from the rough and an accurate chip to round off his week on a high.
Lahiri said, “It’s a wonderful feeling after winning my first ever professional title. I have waited a long time for this moment since I have been on the threshold of a win several times in the past but not really got there. I feel a lot lighter now after having achieved this milestone. It’s now time to build on this victory with equally good performances in the future.”
He added, “I knew I was in the reckoning when I saw the leaderboard at the turn. At that stage I felt I needed about two to three birdies on the back nine to seal the title as players in the leader group generally find it difficult to make too many birdies on the back nine during the final round. That’s exactly what happened today since the three players in the leader group (Amardip Sinh Malik, Mandeo Singh Pathania and Harendra Gupta) found it tough to get back into the game on the back nine.”
C Muniyappa (72, 69, 72, 66), another Bangalore golfer, produced the best round of the day to finish in second place at nine under 279. His round of six under 66 on Sunday was punctuated by an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys. Muniyappa recovered from the rough with his second shot (four iron) and then made a 30 feet putt to make eagle on the 15th.
“I fared well in all aspects of my game today and placed the ball to perfection as the pin positions were very tough. This second-place finish definitely gives me a lot of confidence for the forthcoming events,” said Muniyappa.
Amardip Sinh Malik (70, 67, 71, 73) finished tied third at seven under 281. He had five birdies, three bogeys and a triple bogey in his final round of 73.
Mandeo Singh Pathania (70, 63, 73, 75) and Ranjit Singh Rathore (69, 70, 70, 72) joined Malik in tied third place. Pathania, holder of the course record, made five birdies against four bogeys and two double bogeys in his round of 75 on Sunday.
Harendra Gupta, the overnight leader, slipped to sixth place as a result of his 78 in round four. He totaled six under 282 for the week. Mukesh Kumar was a further stroke behind in seventh place.
Angad Cheema of Shivalik Golf Course, Chandimandir, who finished overall tied 26th at five over 293, won the amateur title as he was the only amateur to make the cut.

Panchkula (Haryana), September 26

Chandigarh’s Harendra Gupta fired a four under 68 at the Panchkula Golf Club on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead ahead of the final round of the Haryana Open 2009 presented by HUDA and DLF. Gupta’s total reads 12 under 204 after round three. Mandeo Singh Pathania, the overnight leader, slipped to second place since he totaled 10 under 206 as a result of his 73 in round three.
Harendra Gupta (67, 69, 68) began with a birdie on the first but his putt lipped-out on the third, where he ended up dropping a stroke. Gupta then hit some quality approach shots on the eighth, 10th and 11th to set up relatively easy birdie putts.
The local favourite kept up the pressure with some steady golf even as adversary Mandeo Singh Pathania seemed to struggle with his game on Saturday. Gupta made his final birdie of the day on the 15th with the help of a 310-yard drive which found the centre of the fairway. This was also his best drive of the day.
“I was very consistent today. I made 14 regulations and hit 12 fairways. My swing has not been very steady but fortunately I enjoy the advantage of local knowledge at this course. Since I am based at Chandigarh, I have played here more often as compared to many other golfers on the tour,” said Gupta.
He added, “A two-stroke lead is not a very substantial lead at this course but I know that if I’m ahead after the front nine in the final round, I stand a good chance since I always score better on the back nine here. A victory this week, would no doubt, give me loads of confidence for the rest of the season.”
Mandeo Singh Pathania (70, 63, 73) was a little out of sorts on the front nine. He three-putted for bogey on the third and then managed to pull a stroke back with a birdie on the fourth. Another three-putt on the ninth led to a double bogey.
Pathania fought back by making eagle-birdie on the 11th and 12th. He chipped-in from the greenside bunker to make eagle on the 11th for the second successive day. A bogey and double bogey followed on the 13th and 15th before he sank a 20-footer for birdie on the 17th.
Pathania said, “Today’s round was nothing like what I managed yesterday. I did not drive well and my putter did not produce the desired results. The only bright spot was the chip-in for eagle from the bunker on the 11th. However, I’m still very eager to make it count this week and am confident of being back at the top of my game in the final round.”
Amardip Sinh Malik (70, 67, 71) is placed third at eight under 208 while Anirban Lahiri and Ranjit Singh Rathore share fourth place at seven under 209.

PANCHKULA, SEPT 25

Mandeo Singh Pathania fired a blistering nine under 63 to break the course record at the Panchkula Golf Club on day two of the Haryana Open 2009 presented by HUDA and DLF. The 26-year-old from Greater Noida thus stole the show in round two and established a comfortable three-stroke lead as he totaled 11 under 133 after two rounds. Harendra Gupta of Chandigarh is currently in second place at eight under 136.
The cut was applied at five over 149. Fifty-three professionals and one amateur made the cut.
Mandeo Singh Pathania (70, 63) broke Vijay Kumar’s six-month-old course record of eight under 64 as he burnt the course with his monstrous drives and steady putting. Mandeo, who is currently 28th on the Aircel-PGTI Order of Merit with one top-10 from 13 starts, had an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey on his card on Friday.
Pathania was in sublime form in round two and hardly missed a fairway or a putt. He made birdie-bogey on the second and third and then began to work his way up the leaderboard with birdies on the sixth and eighth. Pathania’s drive found the greenside bunker on the sixth. He chipped it to within two inches of the cup from the bunker.
Mandeo made birdie-eagle on the 10th and 11th to be five under after 11 holes. His incredible drive on the 292-yard par four 11th came up just two feet short of the pin to set up an easy eagle. He was equally hot with the putter as he holed 10 footers for birdies on the 13th, 14th, 15th. On the 16th, Mandeo hit his second shot from 30 yards to within one foot for yet another birdie.
Harendra Gupta (67, 69), a winner on the Aircel-PGTI in the 2007-08 season, is currently in second place, three strokes behind Pathania. He sank his first birdie of the day on the par three 13th and then picked up another one on the 15th. He bogeyed the 18th to make the turn at one under.

“Even though I shot a lower score in round one, I feel I played better golf in the second round. I say this because I was not driving well today and despite that I produced a three under. The conditions were also tougher today as it was windier,” said Gupta.
Randhir Singh Ghotra of Chandigarh and Amardip Sinh Malik shot scores of 66 and 67 respectively in round two to be tied third at seven under 137.
Anirban Lahiri and Manav Jaini are tied fifth at six under 138.
