Digboi (Assam), October 24

Mukesh Kumar fired a sedate one under 71 in round three of the IndianOil XtraPremium Masters Golf 2009 on Saturday to maintain his overnight three-stroke lead. The defending champion now has a three-day total of 11 under 205. Feroz Ali Mollah, who too carded a 71 on day three, is currently in second position with an overall score of eight under 208.
Mukesh Kumar (68, 66, 71) began with a bogey on the first but then rallied to make a birdie on the par four third, where he drove the green. A bogey on the seventh was soon followed by another birdie on the ninth. The bogey-birdie on the first two holes of the back nine and another birdie on the par three 16th meant Mukesh closed his round with a comfortable lead.
Mukesh, who is now eyeing his eighth title on the Aircel-PGTI, said, “I did not play up to my expectations today. I narrowly missed a 15 feet putt for eagle on the third and also knocked-in a tricky 10-footer for birdie on the ninth. However, I was not satisfied with my putting as I missed a number of short birdie putts on the front nine. My driving was poor but iron shots were on target.”
The professional from Mhow, added, “Feroz is playing well this week so it’s not going to be easy for me in round four. I will try to play percentage golf on the front nine tomorrow and will then take stock of the situation before planning my strategy for the back nine.”
Kolkata’s Feroz Ali Mollah (67, 70, 71) also fired a 71 on a relatively high-scoring day at the Digboi Golf Links to stay within three strokes of the lead. Feroz sank a 20 feet putt on the second to pocket his lone birdie on the front nine. Two birdies (11th, 15th) and two bogeys (12th, 17th) on the back nine helped him close the day in second place.
“I had a decent outing today but I did not putt well. I had only one single putt on the back nine. Nonetheless, I had my chances as I came agonizingly close to sinking eagle putts from 30 and 35 feet on the 11th and 15th respectively,” said Feroz.
He added, “I’ll try to attack the pins from the very start in round four so that I can put some amount of pressure on Mukesh.”
The Delhi duo of Shamim Khan and Vinod Kumar and Kolkata’s Ranjit Singh Rathore currently share third place and are on Feroz’s tail at seven under 209.
Mandeo Singh Pathania is a further stroke back in sixth place.

Mukesh back in familiar territory with a 66

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir Singh)
Digboi (Assam), October 23

Defending champion Mukesh Kumar turned in a bogey-free 66 on Friday to lead the field by three strokes after round two of the IndianOil XtraPremium Masters Golf 2009. Mukesh's total currently reads 10 under 134. Feroz Ali Mollah, the round one leader, fired 70 on daytwo to slip into second place with a total of seven under 137.
The cut was applied at nine over 153. Fifty-one professionals made the cut.
Mukesh Kumar (68, 66), a four-time winner at the IndianOil XtraPremium
Masters (2001-02, 2004, 2007), made a rather quiet start from the 10th on
Friday. He made seven pars and two birdies (14th and 17th) on the back nine
to make the turn at two under.
The professional from Mhow converted a 15 feet putt to pick up a birdie on
the first. He then sank three more birdies on the fifth, seventh and ninth
to submit a card of 66.
Feroz Ali Mollah (67, 70) of Kolkata seemed to be in ominous form as he
bagged four birdies on the front nine. However, he lost the momentum with
two bogeys on the back nine.
Anthony Choat of Australia posted a solid 67 on day two to grab a share of
third place along with Kolkata's Ranjit Singh Rathore at six under 138.
Rathore returned his second successive 69 on Friday.

Rahul Bajaj clinches LG Chandigarh Open

Chandigarh, October 23

Rahul Bajaj rallied from three shots behind to win the LG Samarvir Sahi Chandigarh Open at the par-72 Chandigarh Golf Club here today. Overnight leader Abhinav Lohan got off to a strong start but a meltdown halfway through the final round saw him fall behind Bajaj who staged a grand rally to win the title with a total of six-over 294. Lohan finished one shot behind him at seven-over 295.
Gagan Verma returned a card of 73 to finish in lone third place while Karan Taunk carded 71 to finish in fourth place. Local lad Abhijit Chadha fell down the leaderboard with a 77 in the final round.
But the day was really about the tussle between the winner and runner-up which started off with Abhinav Lohan sending all signals that he would run away with the title. Lohan picked up two birdies very early on in his round and opened up a four shot lead. Bajaj who started off with a bogey, kept himself in contention but with the lead increasing, it looked like Lohan was all set for his maiden title on the LG Amateur Tour.
But what followed was a disastrous run for Lohan which saw him lose six shots, from the 8th to the 15th hole. The double bogey on the 15th from Lohan saw Bajaj get to the top spot for the first time since he held the lead early on in the tournament. A 10-footer for birdie on the next hole increased his lead to three shots and it was all about keeping it together for the Noida Golf Club player to seal his second win.
There were nerves which manifested itself in the form of a bogey on the 17th and a poor tee shot on the final hole for Bajaj. Lohan took one last swipe at the title with a birdie on the last but Bajaj comfortably two-putted to deny him a shot at the title.
The players will now head to Delhi for the LG ITC Classic Open in the first week of November.
Leading scores: 294: Rahul Bajaj (72,81,70,71), 295: Abhinav Lohan (76,75,69,75), 296: Gagan Verma (75,74,75,72), 299: Karan Taunk (78,78,72,71), 300: Vikram Rana (73,79,73,75), 300: Abhijeet Chadha (72,76,75,77), 301: Pawan Kumar (76,74,77,74), 302: Aman Guron (77,75,72,78), 303: Angad Cheema (74,81,75,73), 305: Ankur Chadha (77,77,77,74), 305: Ashbeer S Saini (75,74,81,75), 307: Varoon Parmar (76,81,73,77), 307: L. Punjab thrash Delhi by 10 wickets in Vinoo Mankad match

Panchkula, October 22

An unbeaten and match winning 180-run opening wicket partnership between Jeevan Jyot (86) and Pargat Singh (90) enabled Punjab to record an authentic 10-wicket victory over formidable Delhi in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy match at J.R.Institute of Cricket Technology in Barwala here today.
The decision to bat first after winning the toss by Delhi in the morning on a perfect one day hard strip seemingly full of runs, fired back as Delhi lost both openers in the first mandatory power play of ten overs with just 37 runs on the board.
Milind Kumar showed some commitment to stay in the centre while scoring 34 runs which included couple of silken touch cover-drives to the boundary. The introduction of spinner Anil Sihag coming round the wicket proved fatal for Milind caught in slips. Thereafter, wickets trumbled like pack of cards with the score reading 87 for 6 in 28 overs.
It was Sandeep Shehrawat, who took the attack to opposition with powerfull strokeplay in his valuable 50 runs knock. Varun sood 14 and Vikram Dahiya 19 took the innings to 176 all out in the allotted 50 overs. Baltej Singh 2 for 37,Anil Sihag 2 for 9 Gurinder singh 2 for 27 were the succesfull bowlers for the Punjab team.
Chasing a modest total, the Punjab batsmen were in command from the beginning as openers Jeevan Jyot and Pargat Singh were too harsh to cash on anything loose.
