MUMBAI, November 27

Mukesh Kumar of Mhow and Bangalore’s C Muniyappa are the joint leaders at 11 under 159 after round three of the Aircel-PGTI’s Crompton Greaves Open 2009, a Rs. 80 lakh event being played at The Willingdon Sports Club, Mumbai. Mukesh carded a four under 60 in round three while Muniyappa returned a card of two under 62. Australia’s Kunal Bhasin and Delhi golfer Shamim Khan are tied third at 10 under 160.
The course at The Willingdon Sports Club is undergoing renovation and being re-turfed. As a result of this, holes 7, 8 and 9 are not in play during this event. However, 18 holes will constitute one stipulated round in round three and four. The players will play holes 1 to 6 and then holes 10 to 18 before repeating holes 1, 2 and 3. The par for the course in round three and four is 64.
Mukesh Kumar (51, 48, 60), the 2007-08 Aircel-PGTI Order of Merit winner, shot into contention with a solid round of four under on Friday. Mukesh, who was in fifth place after round two, came up with some great bunker shots to set up birdie putts within four feet on the fourth, fifth, 12th and 18th. The 44-year-old also hit it quite close on the ninth, 11th and 14th, the other holes where he picked up birdies. He bogeyed the eighth, 10th and 16th.
Muniyappa (49, 48, 62) made six birdies against four bogeys on Friday in his round of 62. He hit an amazing four-iron second shot to within four feet to make birdie on the first. He then chipped-in from the left edge on the ninth for another remarkable birdie.

Rashid Khan wins LG Western India Amateur

PUNE, NOV 27

Rashid Khan won the LG Western India Amateur title in comfortable fashion. In the final round today at the Par-71 Poona Club Golf Course, Rashid shot a round of even-par 71, and with a tournament total of one-under 283, the Delhi player won by a margin of five shots.
Rahul Bajaj had to be content with a runner-up finish after he carded a round of four-over 75 to finish five shots back. The best round of the week, however, was delivered by Saurabh Bahuguna who returned a card of five-under 66 to jump to third place with his total at ten-over 294. Gagan Verma and Chikkarangappa were one shot further back at tied fourth place while Pune’s Aditya Bhandarkar slipped to sixth place with a round of 77 today.
It was Rahul Bajaj who got off to a great start with his approach shot on the first hole leaving him with a three-foot putt for birdie which he duly converted to cut down the margin. But he followed that up with a double bogey on the next hole and from that point on it looked like an uphill task for Bajaj to be able to come from behind for an upset. The scored hovered around the same margin for the next few holes with Rashid making some very good saves to ensure that he did not lose any shots.
A fantastic drive on the short par-4 10th seemed to offer a ray of hope for Bajaj as he was left with a very short putt for eagle and that would have reduced the deficit to just one shot. While Bajaj converted his putt, Rashid seemed to wake up from his sedate approach to drill a thirty-foot putt into the hole for birdie. That was perhaps the crushing blow and from there on Rashid held on comfortably to secure his win.
Leading scores: 283: Rashid Khan (69,71,72,71), 288: Rahul Bajaj (69,67,77,75), 294: Saurabh Bahuguna (77,73,78,66), 295: Chikkarangappa (73,75,73,74), 295: Gagan Verma (73,75,72,75), 297: Aditya Bhandarkar (73,73,74,77), 297: Vikram Rana (76,72,71,78), 298: Arshdeep Tiwana (71,75,77,75), 300: H.S.Kang (74,80,70,76), 302: Karan Taunk (76,76,73,77), 303: Kanishk Madan (74,75,76,78), 304: Angad Cheema (74,79,76,75), 304: Moin Malak (76,77,75,76).

FIH to trial Team Referrals at ABN AMRO Champions Trophy

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
CHANDIGARH, NOV 23

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced the trial of an updated Video Umpire system at the ABN AMRO Men’s Champions Trophy, which will take place in Melbourne (AUS) from 28 November to 5 December 2009.
Under the current procedures, Match Umpires may refer decisions to the Video Umpire when they are not convinced that they have taken, or are able to take, the correct decision relating to the awarding or disallowing of goals.
In addition, and on a trial basis for the ABN AMRO Champions Trophy, each team shall be allowed one Team Referral during any match (i.e. including any extra time periods and penalty stroke competitions). It should be noted however that in the event that a Team Referral is upheld, the referring team will retain its right of referral (i.e. they will be able to make another referral).
The Team Referrals trial will provide for a wider range of referral possibilities than for the Umpire Referrals, but are restricted to decisions within the 23 meter areas relating to the award (or non-award) of: Goals, Penalty Strokes and Penalty Corners
The award of personal penalty cards may not be the subject of a Team Referral.
The only person who can request a Team Referral is the captain (or his designated acting captain), who must indicate to the Umpire that he wishes to use his Team Referral. He must do so immediately after the incident or decision which is to be referred as well as confirming this verbally to the Umpire. The player requesting the Team Referral must inform the Umpire of the exact nature of the decision (or non-decision) that his team wishes to be reviewed. The Umpire will then request Video Umpire assistance and relay the necessary information by radio to the Video Umpire. The normal Video Umpire procedures will then be followed.
FIH Competitions Committee Chairman, Ken Read, commented ‘the primary purpose of Video Umpire is to reduce major errors which may impact upon the result of a match. These errors will chiefly occur within the 23 metre areas, and for Team Referrals are not just limited to goal or non-goal decisions. We will review the results of the trial following the Champions Trophy, with a view to having the best Video Umpire system in place that we can for the Men’s and Women’s 2010 World Cups’.

Noida, November 21

Gaurav Pratap Singh registered his first professional win after a nail-biting finish on the final day of the ONGC Masters 2009 at the Noida Golf Course on Saturday. Gaurav, who plays most of his golf at the Noida Golf Course, came through on his home turf despite firing a three over 75 in the final round. He ended the tournament with a total of three under 285. Vijay Kumar of Lucknow finished a close second at two under 286 while Delhi’s Gaurav Ghei was a further stroke back in third place.
Gaurav Pratap Singh (70, 70, 70, 75) enjoyed a comfortable lead for most part of the day even though he had two experienced campaigners such as Vijay Kumar and Gaurav Ghei on his tail. Singh, determined to bag his first professional crown, made a solid start, making pars on the first six holes. He then pulled his drive to the left on the seventh and subsequently three-putted to drop a double bogey. A birdie followed on the very next hole.
Gaurav’s poor hitting form on the final day resulted in his first bogey of the day on the 11th. The 25-year-old then earned a valuable birdie on the par five 14th, where he made a nice recovery thanks to a great chip shot despite going well past the green with his second shot.
Gaurav Pratap, the local favourite, led by three strokes from Gaurav Ghei after the 16th even as Vijay Kumar was a further stroke behind Ghei.
The leader then three-putted from nine feet to make bogey on the 17th, while Gaurav Ghei and Vijay Kumar picked up birdies on the same hole. So the leader group approached the 18th tee with Gaurav Pratap Singh at four under, Gaurav Ghei at three under and Vijay Kumar at two under.
Singh then found the water hazard with his tee shot on the 18th but held on to his nerve to as he came up with an excellent nine iron third shot that landed 15 feet from the pin and helped him make a good bogey for victory.
Gaurav Ghei on the other hand, missed the fairway and an up and down to make double bogey on the final hole and thus finished third. Meanwhile, Vijay Kumar missed his 30-feet birdie putt on the 18th by a whisker and had to settle for second place. Vijay would have headed for a playoff with Gaurav Pratap Singh had he made a birdie on the closing hole.
“I didn’t expect it to get so close at the end. I was targeting a score of 70 today but my poor driving let me down. However, I have no complaints. I finally registered my first win and cannot describe how good it feels to be holding that trophy. I have worked really hard for this and will cherish this moment for a long time to come. I dedicate this win to my parents who have always encouraged me to scale greater heights and my coach Kel Llewellyn whose guidance has made a world of difference to my game,” said Gaurav Pratap Singh.
He added, “I did not have a great score but the highlight of my round was that I managed to get out of a few tricky situations today.”
Vijay Kumar’s (74, 72, 69, 71) final round of one under 71, featured five birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey while Gaurav Ghei’s (74, 72, 70, 71) last round of 71 was marked by four birdies, a bogey and a double bogey.
Vipin Kumar Sharma of the Noida Golf Course finished fourth at two over 290.
Vivek Bhandari, Ranjit Singh and defending champion Shamim Khan secured tied fifth place at three over 291.
