CHANDIGARH, JAN 27 Former Vice-Chancellor of Laxmibai National Univesity of Physical Education, Gwalior and Maulana Abul Kalam Chair and Director Sports, Panjab University Prof Ajmer Singh died here on Tuesday at 10 a.m. He was 70 and leaves behind his wife, two sons and grand children.
According to family sources, Olympian and 1966 Jakarta Asian gold medalist Prof. Ajmer Singh has donated his whole body for medical research to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigah.
His body will be kept for paying last respect to the great sports personality and for rituals at community centre, Pushpak Complex, Sector-49B, Chandigh on January 31 at 11a.m and thereafter his body will be handed over to the PGIMER authorities.
Punjab Sports Director Padam Shree Olympian Pargat Singh expressed his deep sorrow on the demise of former ace Indian sprinter and able educationist. “His death has left a void which would be difficult to fill. It is sad that India has lost a leading sportspersonalty who was an inspiration to all.”
Paying tributes to the former ace Indian athlete Ajmer Singh, Dr Jagtar Singh Gill said “Prof. Ajmer Singh ji is no more with us but his vision, professional commitment, devotion, dedication and his memories will remain with us forever.”
Director Physical Education and Sports of Kurukshetra University, former interntional volleyballer Dalel Singh expressed his deep sorry over the demise of Prof Ajmer Singh. “Besides losing eminent sports personality, I have lost my teacher. I have done my Phd under Ajmer Singh in 2001.”
Dronacharya Desh Prem Azad was shocked hear the death of Prof Ajmer Singh. “I knew him so long. Recently we met at a function. His death is a personal loss to me,” said Azad, coach of cricket icon Kapil Dev Nikhanj and others.
Born on 1 February 1940 at Kup Kaian village in Sangrur, Ajmer Singh hit the headlines in the1966 Jakarta Asian Games in Jakarta where he bagged gold in 400 metres and silver in 200 metres. He was a member of Indian team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Ajmer Singh was conferred the Arjuna Award in 1966.
