Sixteen-year-old Chikkarangappa dominated the final of the matchplay championship at the LG All-India Amateur to become the youngest champion of the national amateur championship in its 109th edition. The final that was played at the par-72 Oxford Golf & Country Club saw Chikka triumph over Delhi lad Bhnaupratap Singh 5&4.
This was Chikka’s second win this season on the LG Amateur Tour, with the first one coming in the middle of last year when he won the LG Karnataka Open at his home club—Eagleton Golf Club. For Bhanupratap Singh, despite losing in the final, it was a dream week as he registered his best finish on the amateur circuit, coming from nowhere to reach the final of the championship.
The tournament final that was to be played over 36 holes, with the finalists covering the course two times over, started with Chikka pushing forward aggressively. In the morning session, it was Chikka all the way as he stormed to a 6Up advantage through the first 18 holes, which included six birdies. Starting at daybreak, Chikka opened with a birdie, but Bhanu got right back into it with a birdie of his own on the par-4 second. But after that, it was all downhill for Bhanu as he struggled to keep pace with Chikka, who made four more birdies before the turn to pull away from Bhanu. There was a hint of a fight but Chikka closed the first session with his sixth birdie of the day to go 6Up.
It was a completely different story in the second session, as Bhanu began to go toe-to-toe with Chikka. With a wide gap already having been established, it was always going to be a tough mountain for the 18-year-old Delhi boy to climb and despite preventing Chikka from extending his lead, he couldn’t take Chikka beyond the 14th hole.
The LG All-India Amateur Championship also brought to an end the 2009-10 season and the next season will commence in April.
Final: S Chikkarangappa bt Bhanupratap Singh 5&4.

Chikka prevails over Prabhagaran

Sixteen-year-old Chikkarangappa defeated Sri Lanka’s K Prabhagaran to set up a title clash against unheralded Bhanupratap Singh in the matchplay championship at the LG All-India Amateur at the par-72 Oxford Golf & Country Club. Chikka beat Prabhagaran 3&1 and Bhanu continued his march over higher-ranked players, as he upset experienced Karan Vasudeva 2&1 on way to final.
The first match of the day lived up to its billing as both Chikkarangappa and Prabhagaran put on an excellent display, producing quality shots in the early part of the match. Chikka managed to go toe-to-toe with the experienced Lankan and through the first eight holes had five birdies against his name, with most of his putts more than ten feet long finding the bottom of the cup. This allowed the Bangalore boy to go 4Up against Prabhagaran. The 29-year-old made a comeback into the match, picking up birdies of his own and after the 13th hole, the score read 1Up in favour of Chikka. But the youngster kept nerves at bay and finished the match with two back-to-back birdies to win the tie.
In the other match, Bhanupratap Singh, who had already notched up his best ever performance on the circuit after he reached the quarter-finals, went into this match as the underdog. But both players struggled with their game on the front-nine, with Karan making the turn with a sizable advantage by his side. After having looked exhausted and out of it, Bhanu found inspiration and put himself back in contention. The match was back to All-square after 12 but on the par-4 13th, a mistake from Bhanu’s caddy almost cost him the match after he raked the bunker under conditions not allowed. The hole was awarded to Vasudeva who went 1Up. Despite that, Bhanu fought on and a birdie three on the 15th followed by Vasudeva finding the hazard on the 16th put Bhanu in the driver’s seat for the first time.
A missed par for Vasudeva on the 17th allowed Bhanu to continue his dream run this week. “It is an incredible feeling. Till now I had not even finished in the top-15 of any tournament and to have made it all the way to the final in the most important tournament on Tour is incredible. One more day, and anything can happen,” said an elated Bhanu after his semi-final match. He will now square up against Chikka in a marathon 36-hole final on Friday.
Semi-final Results (semi-finals): S Chikkarangappa bt K Prabhagaran 3&1; Bhanupratap Singh bt Karan Vasudeva 2&1.
