MUMBAI, April 30

Arjuna Awardee Mahesh Ramachandran cornered glory by winning the UTV Match Racing Nationals title in style after defeating Aashim Mongia 3-1 in a keenly contested final which took place off the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre shores here on Friday. He defended his title since almost more than a decade and the young brigade needs to come up to match his class to break the record.
Aashim Mongia though would be satisfied with his performance and reaching the finals for the first time in five years but he fumbled in the last stage and gave away his title to the seasoned sailor.
The final looked more like a formality for Cdr. Mahesh than anything as it didn’t have the usual fervor of the loud screams for penalties nor some crashes which has been the trend so far. Both the skippers avoided incidents and let their experience take the driver’s seat.
From the first race both were on the course side at the start time and the team of Cdr. Mahesh comprising of Nitin Mongia, Rajesh Dhulaji and Neeraj Sharma put to use their team work to the best effect when it mattered the most.
While the runners-up team of Aashim Mongia which had in the side Gulshan Chunekar, Ninad Mayekar and Chetan Fernandes succumbed under pressure. After losing the first two matches Mongia and his team won the third match giving some hope for tying the scores. But the fourth match was comfortably won by Cdr. Mahesh to finish off the proceedings in his favor.
In the match for the third place between Asian Games qualifying team of Farokh Tarapore who was ably supported by his crew of Balraj, Trunal Helegaonkar, Atool Sinha and Shekhar Yadav had to settle for a bronze medal after losing to Mahesh yesterday in the Semi Finals. They beat Sandeep Jain and his team with a clean sweep 2-0.
“Excellent crew work when it mattered the most. We had a close chase for the title and I am waiting for some youngsters who are getting better to really come and take the title away from us and I hope that happens soon,” said R Mahesh after winning the title.
Final standing: 1 Mahesh Ramachandran and team, 2 Aashim Mongia and team, 3 Farokh Tarapore and team, 4 Sandeep Jain and team, 5 Muthu Rajan and team, 6 Ayaz Shaikh and team, 7 Yuvraj Singh and team, 8 Ayesha Lobo and team, 9 Taramati Matiwade and team, 10 B B Barik.

Silver medallist Qatar International Match Race silver medalist and a bronze medal winner at the Asian Sailing Championships in China, India skipper Mahesh Ramachandran defeated Farokh Tarapore and his team by a very comfortable margin in the UTV Match Racing National Championship in the waters off the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre today. Earlier in the day the round robin phase of the event was completed with the teams of Aashim Mongia, Sandeep Jain, Farokh Tarapore and Mahesh Ramchandran making the cut to go into the semi finals.
The wind speeds were from a westerly direction and were in the range of six to twelve Knots and made for great racing conditions. Aashim Mongia and his crew of Gulshan Chunekar, Chetan Fernandes and Ninad Mayekar were the first off the blocks in their match up with the team from the Army Yachting Node skippered by Sandeep Jain. Aashim who is an Arjuna Awardee used all his experience to ward off the threat of the young guns from the Army to power into the semifinals in 3 races that he controlled from start to finish.
The next match up was the one that was likely to be close as Farokh Tarapore had recently beaten the team led by Mahesh Ramchandran in the Asian Games Selection trials held earlier this month. However the vastly experienced team of Mahesh Ramchandran who is an Arjuna Awardee and is crewed by Nitin Mongia, Neeraj Sharma and Rajesh Dhulaji won all the starts and seemed to be in glorious form sailing the race in phase with the winds and opening healthy leads in all the races they won. They won 3-1 to enter the finals to set up an exciting finals with Aashim Mongia who had partnered Mahesh in 2002 at the Asian Games to win a Bronze together!
When asked Mahesh said "losing the finals of the Asian Games Selection trials in light conditions where the boatspeeds differed made it a lottery and the luck of the draw which the opposition benefitted from. He(Tarapore) just drew the faster boat which he sailed for 3 races that he won so the event was beyond us in spite of us winning our 2 races in the same boat and all the five starts in the finals. It was important for our team to get back into top racing gear and we are in great form and raring to go as usual. It should be an interesting finals tomorrow that we are looking forward to."
The line-up for the finals which is scheduled to be sailed at 1200 is Mahesh Ramchandran vs Aashim Mongia
Petit finals for the 3rd Place Farokh Tarapore Vs Sandeep Jain.

Ashbeer clinches Surya Nepal Masters in dramatic fashion

Kathmandu, April 24

Sixteen-year-old Ashbeer Saini made a late charge to forge ahead and win the Surya Nepal Masters which was played at the par-72 Gokarna Forest Golf Resort. The Indian amateur made two late birdies to secure the title by two shots over Rupak Acharya. Ashbeer shot a round of one-under 71, which took his tournament total to 11-under 277.
Rupak made a bold charge but fell agonizingly short and despite holding the lead briefly in the final round, his last-round score of three-under 69 could only take his tournament total to nine-under 279. Sri Lankan amateur Mithun Perera finished in third place at two-under 286. Bangladesh’s Md Milon Ahmed finished ahead of Shiva Ram Shrestha in fourth place after the big-hitting local made a double bogey on the final hole to drop down the leaderboard to fifth place.
But despite finishing second, Rupak Acharya took home the winner’s cheque of 4,86,000 Nepali Rupees as Ashbeer, being an amateur, is not eligible to receive the prize money. Ashbeer, however, also took home the country championship trophy as a result of being the leading amateur in the field.
Starting the day four shots in front of Rupak, the youngster from Punjab hardly showed any sign of nerves as he reeled off five straight pars. With the others in the leadergroup also not making any move, the leader seemed comfortably placed with a handy lead. But in a little less than twenty minutes, all that changed. Teeing off on the sixth, Ashbeer’s drive nestled next to the base of a tree, just off the fairway. Having to chip out from there, he could not prevent the loss of a shot, making his first bogey of the round. Right on cue, Rupak stepped up to his putt and rolled in a 15-footer for his first birdie which saw the lead being cut down by half.
If the alarm bells were ringing, then there was more drama on the next hole as Ashbeer found the water on the par-5 seventh with his second shot. His second straight bogey was followed by Rupak’s second straight birdie and all of a sudden, the two were level at eight-under for the tournament. Just when it looked like nerves found a prominent place in Ashbeer’s game, it was Rupak who made a bogey on the next hole but he corrected the error on the par-3 10th. Both players added a birdie each on the 11th. For the first time, since halfway through the third round, Rupak took the lead on his own with a good birdie putt on the par-4 14th.
With the local fans cheering Rupak on, Ashbeer needed to dig in to fashion a bold comeback and he managed that in style. A long, curling, birdie putt on the par-3 16th saw him draw level with the leader and another long putt from the lower tier on the green to the upper tier where the pin was placed on the 17th helped him regain the lead. With Rupak finding trouble on the last hole and Ashbeer safely on the green in two, the young lad safely made two putts to capture his first title outside of the junior circuit.
Local favourite Rupak played some excellent golf of his own, catching up with the leader and even going one in front but just couldn’t complete it. He said, “I cannot be disappointed with the result. I played really well but you cannot complain when someone plays better. He just made some great putts towards the end and that was the turning point.”
Leading scores: 277: Ashbeer Saini (A) (IND) (70,70,66,71), 279: Rupak Acharya (68,72,70,69), 286: Mithun Perera (A) (SL) (70,72,73,71), 287: Md. Milon Ahmed (BD) (73,76,67,71), 288: Shiva Ram Shrestha (74,71,69,74), 294: Rabi Khadka (72,73,76,73), 294: Md. Rezaul Karim (BD) (71,74,76,73),
294: Sanjay Lama (71,77,75,71), 295: Md. Dulal Hussain (A) (BD) (75,77,74,69), 295: Mani Rai (77,71,74,73).

Playing his best round ever, 16-year-old Ashbeer Saini marched ahead of the competition to take a four-shot lead after the completion of the third round of the Surya Nepal Masters which is being played at the par-72 Gokarna Forest Golf Resort. The Indian amateur carded a round of six-under 66 to total 10-under 206, four clear of local favourite Rupak Acharya.
Rupak who went toe-to-toe with Ashbeer in the early part of the round, could not match the young golfer’s pace and had to be content with a round of two-under 70 which puts him at six-under 210 for the tournament. The long-hitting Shiva Ram Shrestha made his way into the leadergroup for the final round after shooting a round of three-under 69. His second consecutive under-par round took his tournament total to two-under, one clear of fourth-placed Mithun Perera. The Sri Lankan amateur shot one-over 73 after a day when his disobedient putter curtailed his challenge. Bangladesh’s Milon Ahmed carded a round of five-under 67 to move into fifth place behind Mithun.
Starting level with Ashbeer, it was Rupak who made the first move, making a birdie from close range on the first hole to go one in front. The Indian amateur caught up with him on the next hole with a 20-footer for birdie and went on to take lead on his own after he made another birdie on the par-5 third. Refusing to lie low, Rupak, too, came back with a birdie and both players picked up a birdie each on the sixth to be tied at seven-under for the tournament.
But the turning point came on the par-5 seventh where Ashbeer made an eagle, his third of the tournament, from just off the green, after his chip landed on the green and rolled right into the cup, taking his score to five-under for the round. His only blemish came on the next hole, where a poor tee shot resulted in a bogey but he still made the turn with a one-shot lead. He extended that on the par-5 12th and followed it up with a run of five straight pars till the last hole.
By the time the leaders made it to the 18th, Ashbeer held a three-shot lead and a well-controlled shot from the fairway gave him a chance to move into double digit figures in the red. With an eager gallery eyeing his birdie putt, the youngster calmly rolled it in and pulled off the best round of his just flowering golf career.
Last year’s runner-up Perera seemed set to post a low score but a number of missed short putts put a disappointing score on the card of an otherwise quality round by the portly Lankan golfer. The final round looks set to produce exciting golf and with as many as five Nepali professionals in the top-ten going into the final ound of this year’s tournament, which offers a record prize purse of 3 million Nepali rupees, a day of opportunity lies in store for them.
Leading scores: 206: Ashbeer Saini (A) (IND) (70,70,66), 210: Rupak Acharya (68,72,70), 214: Shiva Ram Shrestha (74,71,69), 215: Mithun Perera (A) (SL) (70,72,73), 216: Md. Milon Ahmed (BD) (73,76,67), 220: Rajan Thapa (74,73,73),
