PUNE, JUNE 24
Himmat Singh Rai shot a second consecutive score of three under 68 to open up a three stroke lead on day three of the Aircel PGTI Players Championship presented by Poona Club Ltd. The Delhi golfer’s total now stands at seven under 206. Gaganjeet Bhullar of Kapurthala and Sri Lankan Anura Rohana are in joint second at four under 209.
Himmat Singh Rai (70-68-68) made a solid start to the third round as he made pars on the first seven holes. The 23-year-old then began breaking away from the rest of the field thanks to some excellent putting. He scored four birdies over the next seven holes (eighth through the 14th). The bogey on the 17th was the only blemish on his card.
Himmat, who has impressed the likes of K J Choi while playing on the Asian Tour, will now be gunning for his second professional title.
Himmat said, “The putter was hot today. I made some crucial putts from about 10 feet. I also managed to keep the ball in play throughout my round otherwise it would’ve been difficult to shoot a low number. A brilliant par save on the 13th gave me a lot of confidence. The course conditions were pretty good today despite the heavy rain on Wednesday. The greens were in great shape.
“My aim in the final round will be to keep the ball in play as much as possible. I will try not to get too ahead of myself and will just take it hole by hole.”
Gaganjeet Bhullar (70-70-69) and Anura Rohana (74-70-65) will ensure that the leader does not have it easy in round four. Bhullar and Rohana are currently three strokes off the lead in tied second.

Chandigarh dethrone Karnataka on way to final

CHANDIGARH, JUNE 24

Underdogs Chandigarh continued to dazzle and today they dethroned defending champions Karnataka with an imposing 4-1 verdict in the semi-final of the 49th National Junior Under-19 Football Championship for Dr B C Roy Trophy being played at the Mohun Bagan ground in Kolkata.
Giving improved performance with every passing match, Chandigarh advanced to the final for the first time in the history of Chandigarh football. They played an organised game against formidable Karnataka, who had defeated Orissa in the final of the last edition in Bangalore, to register a creditable victory.
Karnataka on the other hand, failed to put their best foot forward when it was most needed and could only blame themselves for their dismal performance against Chandigarh.
Captain Gagandeep Singh (17th, 75th) and Sumit Passi (50th and 87th) scored a brace each as Chandigarh outplayed Karnataka in all departments of the game. Lokesh scored the face-saving goal for holders Karnataka in the 79th minute.
Coach Tejinder Kumar said that the boys played an inspired game and dominated throughout the match. "After initial probings, Chandigarh were given lead by captain Gagandeep Singh who converted a measured pass from Chinkash," said Tejinder Kumar, who is a senior football coach in the Chandigarh Sports Department. The Chandigarh team kept the slender lead intact in the first half.
On resumption, the charged Chandigarh boys enjoyed the territorial supremancy. A cross from the right from Raman was driven into the goal by Sumit Passi in the 50th minute. This might have demoralised Karnataka who suffered another jolt in the 75th minute. Midfielder Shehnaz, who played his heart out today, fed Gagandeep Singh who drew the Karnataka goalkeeper out before placing the ball in the corner with a brilliant shot.
Karnataka tried their best to match the Chandigarh boys in vain. However, they were able to reduce the margin in the 79th minute through Lokesh (1-4).
According to Chandigarh manager Rajeev Rattan, Karnataka had some good tries at the Chandigarh goal. However, goalkeeper Ruat brought out some outstanding saves. Twice Ruat collected the thundering drives from Karnataka striker Lokesh.
Sumit Passi sealed the fate of Karnataka in the 87th minute when he deflected a centre from Aman as Chandigarh raced to a 4-1 verdict.
Chandigarh will now await the outcome of the second semi-final to be played tomorrow between Bengal and Uttrakhand. The final is slated for June 27.
Expressing his happiness over team's performance against defending champions Karnataka, Joint Director Sports Dr JPS Sidhu said "it is a proud privilege for City Beautiful as the Chandigarh team entered the final for the first time in the history of Chandigarh football. The coordination between the state owned Chandigarh Football Hockey Academy and the Chandigarh Football Association resulted in the outstanding display by the Chandigarh boys."
"Supportive attitude of the concerned officials of the Chandigarh Administration and the Chandigarh Football Association also played a vital role in shaping the Chandigarh boys who attended a month-long camp at the Sector 17 Football Stadium and the Sector 42 Football Ground," said Dr Sidhu.
An elated Chandigarh Football Association general secretary Rakesh Bakshi congratulated the players for shocking strong contenders and holders Karnataka with an impressive 4-1 margin in the semi-final. "Its a big achievement for the Chandigarh team. It will certainly further boost this discipline in the City Beautiful."
"On their return from Kolkata, the Chandigarh boys would be felicitated at a function," said Rakesh Bakshi.

Pargat Singh spearheads Olympians at ‘Clean Sports India’ to rid sports of political clout

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir) NEW DELHI, JUNE 23
Olympians and international players today joined forces to launch ‘Clean Sports India’ in New Delhi to mark the International Olympic Day which is celebrated world over on June 23. In the Indian sporting context it was a red letter day.
The organization is spearheaded by the legendary hockey skipper Olympian Pargat Singh, as the president.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi today, Padamshree Pargat Singh made it clear that they were neither fighting anyone nor were they at war; but this was a peaceful movement inspired by the Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation and Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of Modern Olympics.
His sentimental mention of sports still being enslaved after 64 years of India’s independence, evoked nods across the conference hall. Executive member Tom Alter, the renowned actor, anchored the conference and insisted that ‘Clean Sports India’ aimed at empowering the sportspersons in India to resist exploitation and not compromise to basic human rights.
Pargat Singh, who Punjab Sports Director, reiterated that this campaign was different from other similar movements in the past, as ‘Clean Sports India’ is not conceived out of frustration but was a well thought-out strategy that will be a year-long people’s movement for a bigger picture to weed out the malice of politicians from sports administration especially the federations and associations that have been corrupted due to the vested interests of people namely Suresh Kalmadi, who have brought nothing but a legacy of disorganized mismanagement that has been the sole cause of the decline in Indian sport seen in the past two decades .
Pargat Singh questioned the logic of having non-sportspersons at the helm of sports organizations and especially having genuine sportspersons debarred from the same without any reason. He asserted that it was the right time, for an organization such as Clean Sports India to take action to the masses as the present scenario has built an image of distrust not merely within the sports industry, but on the society as a whole - a fact that there are no sponsors backing these federations.
Apart from Pargat Singh, other Olympians namely Ashwini Nachappa, Vandana Rao, Vandana Shanbag and Reeth Abraham along with Bhugeswar Boruah, Executive Founding Members of ‘Clean Sports India’ echoed similar sentiments and cited disbelief at the state in which Indian sports finds itself and the shock that the new generation had no interest in playing sport for the lack of an organized structure and absence of sporting icons for inspiration.
The firm hand of BVP Rao, Convener Clean Sports India behind these athletes, gave them the confidence of a man who had been at the helm of sports administration both at the national and international level, made a presentation of a case study where more than 34 apex positions in the Assam state sports was grabbed by 25 politicians.
He openly claimed that stars like Pargat should be contesting elections with the Indian Hockey Federation which should be followed up by other sportspersons in various federations across the 640 districts in India-a strategic move to bring order and legitimacy to the chaos lamented by politicians in Indian sport.
