Ashok Kumar, Gaurav Pratap Singh and Feroz Ali Mollah produced identical scores of four under 68 to hold the joint lead after round one of the PGTI Players Championship presented by Chandigarh Golf Club. Harendra Gupta and Sandeep Syal are one stroke behind the leaders in joint fourth position.
Delhi’s Ashok Kumar, a seven-time winner on the Aircel-PGTI, was even par after 12 holes as he had birdied the fourth and bogeyed the 12th. He then unleashed a 340-yard drive on the par five 13th that helped him set up an eagle. The Delhi golfer made successive birdies on the 16th and 17th to close the day at four under. He drove the green on the par four 17th and two-putted from 30 feet for birdie.
Ashok, who has never won at the Chandigarh Golf Club, is eager to set the record straight this time around.
Ashok said, “I’m really keen to win at the Chandigarh Golf Club. I have been beaten in a few playoffs at this venue in the past and I want to make up for all those losses during this week. I’m in the process of recovering from a wrist injury that kept me out of action for the last three months and today’s round of 68 provided me the ideal start for the second half of the season.”
He added, “My driving was fantastic today and I also holed some decent putts including one from 15 feet for birdie on the 16th.”
Gaurav Pratap Singh of Noida, a winner on the Aircel-PGTI last season, fired five birdies against a lone bogey to be at the top of the leaderboard. The 26-year-old, who made two cuts out of four starts in his first season on the Asian Tour this year, putted consistently and made a great par save on the 16th on day one.
“This is a great start for me considering that I have had an ordinary season so far. This is the best I have played since I sustained an injury towards the end of last year. I now feel that I’m getting back into form,” said Gaurav.
Feroz Ali Mollah of Kolkata also ended the day as the joint leader as he came up with five birdies and a bogey in his opening round. The former Indian Open champion, who has never won on the Aircel-PGTI, hit it close through the day.
Feroz said, “I hit it close today, especially on the 10th where I landed it within four feet from 100 yards out. I hope to carry on this form and post a good finish this week.”
Harendra Gupta was the highest placed among the Chandigarh golfers on Tuesday. He returned a 69 to be tied fourth along with Sandeep Syal of Chennai.
Mukesh Kumar, Ajeetesh Sandhu of Chandigarh, Raju Ali Mollah and Shankar Das are a further stroke back in tied sixth.
Rahil Gangjee, one of the pre-tournament favourites, is tied 15th at even par 72 while Chandigarh’s Sujjan Singh lies tied 70th at five over 77.

CHENNAI, AUG 30
Punjab were stopped in their tracks by Mumbai when they handed them a 90 runs defeat in the finals of Buchi Babu Tournament here today. Batting first Mumbai scored 284 runs for all in the allotted 90 overs. They were well served by their skipper Abhishek Nair who scored a polished century (135) to take their team to a respectable total.
Punjab made an early dent in Mumbai batting when right arm medium pacer Luv Abhlish induced an edge from opener Atul Banay to be snapped up by Perry Goel on the third ball of the innings with the Mumbai score reading 0 for 1. Thereafter Abhishek Nair pulverized the Punjab attack by hitting all round the wicket and taking his team to a respectable score.
Other Mumbai batsman gave ample support to Abhishek Nair. They showed grit and determination and their last wicket partnership was also worth 35 runs. For Punjab the in form leg spinner Rahul Sharma returned figures of 4 for 85 off 26 over’s, he was ably supported by medium pacer Luv Abhlish 2 for 39 off 15 over’s, while the other medium pacer Bharat Loomba chipped in with 1 for 29.
Replying Punjab were bundled out for 194 runs in 72 overs. They were well served by Taruwar Kolhi (65) Vishwas Bhalla ( 43) and Perry Goel ( 32) Taruwar Kolhi and Vishwas Bhalla were involved in a fruitful 80 runs partnership for the third wicket.
Punjab earlier in the morning were reduced to 26 for 3 as they lost skipper Karan Goel (4), Sarul Kanwar(4) and Mandeep Singh (9) with the total reading measly 26 for 3 before Taruwar Kolhi (65) with 7 boundaries and Vishwas Bhalla (42) off 121 balls with 2 boundaries steadied  the ship and took the total to 103 when Vishwas Bhalla got out. Most of the Punjab Batsman committed hara-kiri by going for the big shots but failing to clear the fielders.
Their cavalier attitude brought rich rewards for off Spinner Vikrant who returned impressive figures of 10-2-46-5. Earlier in the innings right arm Medium pacer murtuza and left arm Medium pacer Sourabh Netravalkar accounted for 2 wickets each. Punjab steamrolled Kerala into submission by 53 runs riding on a scintillating all-round display by lanky right arm leg spinner Rahul Sharma in the Buchi Babu Cricket Tournament here today.
After having scored an unbeaten 69 yesterday and taking his side to the realms of safety he unleashed his probing leg spinners to demolish the Kerala batting line up by returning flattering figures of 23.3-5-58-6. Kerala started their run chase with S.Sharma and Jagdish and lost their first wicket at 20 when Jagdish was castled by medium pacer Bharat Loomba for 18 of 38 balls inclusive of two boundaries.  Bharat Loomba removed Robert on the very next delivery clean bowling him for a naught.   Reducing Kerala to 20 for 2 in space of 2 deliveries. Rohan Prem who came in next averted the hat-trick by Bharat Loomba.  Rohan Prem and S. Sharma then got together and stitched  72 runs for the third wicket in 29.2 overs before Rohan Prem was run out by Perry Goel for 39 of 97 balls studded with three boundaries and one six.  At this stage Kerala were 92 for 3 in 39.1 overs.  Rahul Sharma who was introduced into the attack trapped Gomez  plumb in front of the wicket for (6) of 7 deliveries reducing Kerala to 99 for 4.  In the mean while S. Sharma was holding one end up but he also departed at the total of 108 after scoring 33 of 118 balls with the help of two boundaries.
Kerala’s fortune rested on Sri Kumar Nair but he too was done in by Rahul Sharma who had him caught by Bipul Sharma for 14 of 27 deliveries inclusive of one boundary and one six.  In the meanwhile P.Prashant was out hit wicket while playing back to a ball from Bipul Sharma for one. At this stage Kerala were looking down the barrel having lost 7 wickets for a paltry 122 off  53 overs.
Then a rear guard action by Rizwan and Sunil took the score to 191 in 73.1 overs when Rahul Sharma brought an end to this enterprising stand of 69 runs by clean bowling Sunil  for 45 of 48 balls embellished with 5 well struck boundaries and a towering six. Rahul Sharma who was in full cry  then had Rizwan snapped up by Karan Goel for 39 off 113 deliveries with 3 boundaries at the total of 204 on the first delivery off his 24th over.   He wrapped up the innings by clean bowling the last man on the 3rd ball of the 24th over with total remaining at 204 thus eking out a 53 runs win for his team.
Punjab entered the finals where they would be crossing swords with Mumbai who had disposed off Karnataka in the other semi finals.  The two day final will be played at MAC Stadium, Chennai on August 29.
Brief scores : Punjab: 257 for 9 in 90 overs. Kerala: 204 for all out in 79.4 overs (Rohan Prem  39, Rizwan  39, Sunil  45, S.Sharma  33, Rahul Sharma  6 for 58, Bharat Loomba  2 for 34, Bipul Sharma 1 for  3).
