JAIPUR, NOV 30
Karnal’s Maniram Sharma and Pradeep Kumar of Noida shot matching scores of two under 68 to take the joint lead in round one of the PGTI Feeder Tour being played at the Rambagh Golf Club, Jaipur. Sudhir Sharma and Divyanshu Bajaj are tied third at one under 69.

The seventh and final leg of the PGTI Feeder Tour 2010 features sixty-two professionals and carries prize money worth Rs. 5 lakh. The field includes eleven professionals from Jaipur.
Maniram Sharma’s two under 68 featured birdies on the seventh, 12th, 13th, 14th and 17th and bogeys on the first, 11th and 15th. He chipped-in from the bunker for birdie on the 12th.
Maniram, the current leader on the PGTI Feeder Tour Order of Merit with three wins in the season, said, “I had a decent outing today. I should have had a lower score had my putting not let me down. Jeev advised three weeks of complete rest

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
NEW DELHI, NOV 29
India's most decorated golfer, Jeev Milkha Singh, has been advised three weeks of complete rest following extensive medical tests on his problematic lower back on Monday.
The Chandigarh golfer, who had to withdraw halfway through the Casio World Open on the Japan Golf Tour on Saturday, will also have to sit out of the Hero Honda Indian Open this week.
After a series of tests and MRI scans, Jeev said he was lucky the injury did not turn out to be as serious as he initially thought it would be.
"I was actually feared the worst. There is a muscle tear around the L4 and L5, and there is a slight bulge in one of the discs which was pinching against a nerve and causing the intense pain," said Jeev.
"The doctor has asked me to take complete rest for three weeks with intensive physiotherapy sessions. Hopefully, the disc will move back in place soon and there should not be any long-term damages. If all goes well over the next few days, I will be able to resume practicing in the New Year.
"Unfortunately, the injury means I will have to pull out of the Hero Honda Indian Open. It's a huge disappointment for me because I was looking forward to playing in India after a long gap, and also because I greatly admire what Hero Honda has done for Indian golf, as well as for me personally.
"I wish the tournament all the best, and hope that the best man will win on Sunday."

Ashok Kumar cruises to victory with a sublime 62

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)NEW DELHI, NOV 27
Ashok Kumar of Delhi cruised to a mammoth 10-stroke victory at the DDA Open 2010 after he posted a sublime eight under 62 in the final round on Saturday. Ashok ended the tournament with an impressive total of 20 under 260. Chandigarh’s Sujjan Singh shot a three under 67 to finish a distant second at 10 under 270.
Ashok Kumar (63-68-67-62) began with a flurry of birdies on the first, second and fourth to launch an early assault for the title. His tremendous hitting prowess ensured that he left himself birdie putts of two feet or less on these three holes.
The mercurial Ashok stepped on the gas with more birdies on the ninth, 10th and 12th to all but seal the title. He sank an 18 feet putt for birdie on the ninth. As he regained his touch with the putter, the leader secured two more birdies from 10 feet on the 15th and 16th.
Ashok thus wrapped up his second straight win on the Aircel PGTI and overall fourth win of the season. The triumph at the Qutab Golf Course also happened to be the Delhi golfer’s 11th success on the Aircel PGTI and he is now tied with Mukesh Kumar for the maximum number of titles on the tour.
“My putting form had deserted me in the previous rounds but fortunately that was not the case today. Three birdies on the first five holes turned out to be a huge bonus for me as I had planned to play it safe over the first five holes where the fairways are very tight. The brilliant start lifted my confidence and there was no looking back from there on,” said Ashok.
He added, “The 2010 season is turning out to be an exceptional one for me and I attribute this golden run to my improved mental strength. I have worked on my mental fitness this year and as a result I am not making as many errors as I used to earlier.”
The winner’s cheque of Rs. 484,950 has consolidated the Delhi golfer’s position at the top of the Rolex Rankings. He is now sitting pretty at number one with earnings of Rs. 4,893,092 for the year. Anirban Lahiri is in second position as he has so far earned Rs. 3,736,208 in the 2010 season.
Sujjan Singh (68-66-69-67), a winner on the Aircel PGTI earlier this year, was the only other golfer besides Ashok who recorded four under par scores this week. Sujjan’s 67 featured four birdies and a bogey. The Chandigarh golfer’s runner-up finish secured him his fourth top-10 of the year.
Sujjan, who took a few weeks break from the tour as he recently got married, said, “I’m quite pleased with my consistency since I shot four red numbers. Ten under is a fantastic total. I have been working on my swing and I recently changed my clubs. These changes are working well for me.”
Vijay Kumar’s final round 67 moved his total to nine under 271 and propelled the Lucknow golfer from overnight sixth to third position on the final day.
Gaurav Pratap Singh claimed fourth position with an eight under 272 total. Vikrant Chopra and Naman Dawar finished one stroke behind Gaurav in tied fifth.
R Murthy of Bangalore made a hole-in-one with his rescue on the 208-yard sixth hole that helped him sign-off with a terrific 66. Murthy secured tied 20th place at one under 279.
Deepinder Singh Kullar also pulled-off an ace on the final day. Number thirteen proved to be lucky for the Gurgaon-based professional as he achieved the feat on the 153-yard 13th hole with a seven-iron. He fired a 75 in round four to end up in tied 53rd position at 10 over 290.
Amateur golfer Karan Vasudeva, who finished overall tied 20th at one under 279, won the prize for the best amateur score at the tournament.

Injured Jeev Milkha withdraws from World Cup

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
CHANDIGARH, NOV 27
Ace Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh of Chandigarh has withdrawn from of the Casio World Open on the Japan Golf Tour following a lower hip injury.
Jeev, who was two-under for the tournament at the halfway stage and comfortably made the cut, pulled out before the start of his third round on Saturday.
The Chandigarh golfer, who has dropped to world No157 on the back of a season plagued with injury, is expected to undergo a series of MRI scans when he returns to New Delhi on Sunday morning.
The 39-year-old Jeev said: "I have been playing with a slight shoulder injury for some time, aided with intensive physiotherapy sessions. Things were definitely looking better with both my physique, and my form.
"I did not qualify for Dubai World Championship on the European Tour this week and decided to play in Japan, a country I love having spent so many years playing this Tour. I was feeling a little bit of pain in my shoulder, but it wasn't anything alarming.
"However, after I finished my dinner last night, I just could not get up from the chair. I felt intense pain. I somehow reached my room, but even though I tried to rest, the pain just would not subside.
"This morning, I reached the golf course very early and spent three hours with the very capable physio unit of the Japan Golf Tour, but it did not help and I was forced to withdraw.
"I am very disappointed as I had only a couple more tournaments in my schedule after this, and I was really looking forward to it. It's even more frustrating because I know I am playing some very solid golf at the moment.
"I am hoping that I will be all right before the Hero Honda Indian Open. However, I can only take a decision on that after I get the results of my MRI scans."

Ashok enjoys two-stroke advantage

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
NEW DELHI, NOV 26
Ashok Kumar came up with a three under 67 to take the third round lead at the DDA Open 2010. Ashok’s total of 12 under 198 placed him two strokes ahead of Naman Dawar, who fired a 68 on Friday.

Ashok Kumar (63-68-67), a winner on 10 occasions on the Aircel PGTI, had a steady front nine despite being in poor putting form. He made pars on the first nine holes. Ashok earned his first birdie of the day on the par three 10th where he sank an eight feet putt.
After making bogey on the 11th, the 27-year-old pulled two strokes back with an eagle on the 12th. Ashok went on to roll it in from 12 feet for birdie on the 17th.
Ashok said, “My poor putting form continued in the third round. I missed a number of short putts, including one on the 11th that resulted in a bogey. The highlight of the round today was the eagle on the 12th, where I landed my pitching wedge approach shot just one foot from the pin.
“I’ll look to play steady on the first five holes in the final round. Since the first five holes are the toughest stretch at the Qutab Golf Course, I’ll be happy if I’m one under after the fifth. I plan to attack the pins from the sixth hole onwards.”
Naman Dawar (68-64-68), who like Ashok also hails from the Delhi Golf Club, made four birdies against two bogeys in his round of 68 on Friday. His total currently stands at 10 under 200.
“The putter was cold today. It was the birdie on the eighth that gave me the momentum in round three. I recovered really well to make birdie on the eighth after landing my tee shot on the adjoining fairway. I hit my best drive of the day on the 12th to set up yet another birdie,” said Dawar.
Gaurav Pratap Singh ended day three in third place at nine under 201. He shot an even par 70 on Friday.
Sujjan Singh and Anirudh Goyal are in tied fourth at seven under 203.

Pools announced for FIH Indoor World Cups

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
CHANDIGARH, NOV 26
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is pleased to announce the official Pools for the 3rd FIH Indoor World Cup for men and women. The double event – which takes place once every four years – will be played in the Polish city of Poznan from Februrary 8 to 13 next year.
For the first time in the short history of the FIH Indoor World Cup, all five continents will be represented at the third Edition of the tournament. The national indoor teams of Iran (men) and Kazakhstan (women) are history makers by representing Asia in an Indoor World Cup for the first time, with the respective men's and women's teams from Uruguay and Argentina being the first ever participants from South America, showing the increasing popularity of the indoor game outside of its European heartland. There are also Indoor World Cup debuts for Namibia (men & women) and England (men).
In Pool A of the men’s competition, host nation Poland will face Namibia, Australia, Canada, The Netherlands and Germany, the double World Champions. The mighty Germans will be aiming to claim their third successive FIH Indoor World Cup title, following Gold medal performances in Leipzig 2003 and Vienna 2007, where they defeated Poland in the tournament final. The Poles will be determined to rectify that on home soil in February, but will also face stern tests from their fellow Pool A contenders in the fight to reach the tournament semi-finals.
2010 EuroHockey Indoor Nations champions Austria will be one of the favourites to emerge from Pool B, which also features Russia, Czech Republic, England, USA and Iran. Russia were runners up to Austria in the 2010 EuroHockey Nations event, suggesting that they will also be a team to watch in this Pool.
Pool A of the women’s competition sees reigning World Champions The Netherlands taking on EuroHockey Indoor Nations Champions Ukraine, as well as Czech Republic, Austria, Argentina and Kazakhstan. The Netherlands and Ukraine will be considered as marginal favourites to progress to the Semi Finals from Pool A, but will face strong resistance from skilful and unpredictable opponents.
Germany and Belarus, who finished 3rd and 5th respectively at the 2010 EuroHockey Indoor Nations Championships, are arguably the two strongest teams in Pool B. However, host nation Poland will be keen to make home advantage count and secure a place in the Semi Finals. Australia, Namibia and Uruguay complete the Pool B line-up.
The FIH Indoor World Cup will take place at the Poznan International Fair Exhibition Hall in February 2011, a year which marks the 85th anniversary of the foundation of the Polish Hockey Association. A complete match schedule for the tournament will be released in the coming weeks.
Pools: Men: Pool A: Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Namibia.
Pool B: Austria, Russia, Czech Republic, England, USA, Iran.

Gaurav Pratap Singh rises to the occasion with a 63

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
NEW DELHI, NOV 25
Gaurav Pratap Singh rose to the occasion with a seven under 63 in round two of the DDA Open. The Noida lad is now tied for the lead along with Ashok Kumar at nine under 131. Ashok fired a two under 68 on day two.

The Delhi duo of Naman Dawar and Anirudh Goyal is tied third at eight under 132.
The cut was declared at two over 142 on a day that witnessed forty under par scores. Fifty-six professionals and two amateurs made the cut.
Gaurav Pratap Singh (68-63) followed up his first round 68 with a superb 63 on Thursday. Gaurav, a title winner on the Aircel PGTI during the 2009 season, began the day from the 10th and went on the rampage with three straight birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th. He hit his approach shot with pin-point precision for the birdie on the 11th and sank a six feet birdie putt on the 13th. Singh added another birdie on the 18th to go four under at the turn.
A good par save from the bunker on the first raised the 26-year-old’s confidence and he went on to collect three more birdies on the third, fourth and eighth.
“I’ve been hitting it really well since the second half of the first round. I only struggled with my hitting in the first half of round one. My putting has also been quite consistent. I converted a few tricky four feet putts for birdie today. One of my best birdies today came on the eighth where my chip hit the flag,” said the free-spirited Gaurav.
He added, “Nine under is a fantastic score for two rounds. However, it’s now important to capitalize on this solid foundation.”
Ashok Kumar (63-68), the overnight leader by two strokes, made five birdies and three bogeys in his second round of 68 to drop into the joint lead along with Gaurav Pratap Singh.
Ashok said, “It was a disappointing day with the putter. I made too many bogeys today and that somehow disturbed my rhythm.”
Naman Dawar’s six under 64 placed him in tied third at eight under 132 along with Anirudh Goyal. Dawar’s round featured eight birdies and two bogeys. Anirudh, on the other hand, shot a 67.
Vijay Kumar also fired a 64 to end the day in tied fifth at six under 134. Sujjan Singh carded a 66 that placed him in joint fifth along with Vijay Kumar.

Golden Sunday for India i n Asian Games!

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
Guangzhou (China), Nov 21
Women athletes made the country proud when they took 2 gold and 1 silver medals on the opening day of athletics competitions in 16th Asian Games here today.
Distance running stars Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut came from behind to made it 1-2 in the 10,000m with personal best timings of 31:50.47 and 31:51.44 respectively. Bahrain’s 20-year-old Shitaye Eshete, who briefly led the race after Japanese duo Kayoko Fukushi and Hikari Yoshimoto, took the bronze medal, clocking yet another personal best of 31:53.27.
Kavita, who won a bronze medal behind Kenyans at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games at New Delhi last month, was familiar in Guangzhou as she already won two medals – silver in 10000m and a bronze in 5000m – at the same during the Asian championships last year.
Preeja, who had a disappointing seventh place at Delhi CWG, ran a well judged race to take over her rivals on the waning moments of the race and improved her national mark by nearly 15 seconds to grab the gold medal.
The Indian camp was in celebration again when steeplechaser Sudha Singh of Uttar Pradesh brought the second gold of the day as she too improved upon her national mark set during CWG to return a time of 9:55.67 for the top spot. Unlike in the 10000m, Sudha along with training partner O.P. Jaisha took the field and changed the lead between them right from the beginning. Ashok Kumar claims 9th Tata Open

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com ((Balbir)
JAMSHEDPUR, NOV 21
Delhi’s Ashok Kumar eased to a six-stroke win at the 9th TATA Open after returning a one over 70 in the final round on Sunday. Ashok thus ended the tournament with a total of 16 under 160. Vijay Kumar finished as runner-up as he totaled 10 under 266.
Ashok Kumar’s win at Jamshedpur was his third of the season and it helped him climb from second position to first place in the 2010 Rolex Rankings as he took home the winner’s cheque worth Rs. 808,250.
The final round on Sunday had the same format as the third round. The entire field played nine holes each on both the courses, Beldih as well as Golmuri. While one half of the field teed off from Beldih, the other half began its round from Golmuri. Twenty-six golfers with the best scores at the end of round three teed off from Golmuri and finished at Beldih. The par for the combined courses was 69.
Ashok Kumar (59-65-66-70), the overnight leader by six strokes, was not at the top of his game in the final round but despite that he did not lose focus and managed to drive home the advantage with a sedate 70.
Ashok made eight pars and a bogey on the front nine to be one over at the turn. He then bogeyed the 10th as a result of missing a chip-putt and went two over for the day. Ashok thereafter shut the door on his nearest rivals with birdies on the 12th and 13th. The leader hit his tee shot out of bounds on the 16th and therefore dropped another bogey. However, he still managed to get home with a six-stroke cushion.
Ashok said, “I’m delighted to bag my third title of the year and be back on top in the Rolex Rankings. I was nowhere close to being at my best today. I struggled with my hitting and putting. I think the huge lead that I had built in the first two rounds got me home on the final day. I was also fortunate that Vijay Kumar and Manav Jaini, the other two top contenders, could not make a charge on the final day.”
Vijay Kumar (67-64-65-70) of Lucknow also shot a one over 70 on the final day to finish as the runner-up with a total of 10 under 266. Vijay’s last round included a birdie and two bogeys.
Delhi’s Vikrant Chopra (67-68-68-64), fired the day’s best score, a five under 64, to end the tournament in third place at nine under 267. Vikrant made six birdies against a lone bogey in round four.
Manav Jaini, another Delhi golfer, fired a three over 72 to secure fourth place as he totaled eight under 268 for the tournament.
Pune’s Gurki Shergill, the winner of the 8th TATA Open, finished in tied fifth along with Anura Rohana of Sri Lanka at six under 270.
Karan Taunk of Jamshedpur won the trophy for the best amateur score. Taunk, the lone amateur to make the cut, finished overall 35th, having totaled four over 280 for the tournament.
Navtez Singh of Jamshedpur secured tied 38th place at five over 281.

Arguably the most significant decision came in regards to a proposed change to the FIH Statutes, which was one of the five priorities from the FIH Strategic Plan for 2010-2016. The proposals were designed to make the FIH a more efficient, streamlined organization that would be able to make clear and effective decisions to aid hockey’s development.

They will be joined on the new Executive Board by Michael Green (GER), who has been named as the Chair of the Athletes Committee.
FIH Chief Executive Officer Kelly Fairweather described the decisions as hugely significant for the sport. “I firmly believe that hockey is entering a new era”, said Fairweather. “These decisions show that our sport is taking a bold new direction which will help us achieve the targets that we have set for ourselves in our Strategic Plan 2010-2016.”
