NEW DELHI, DEC 19
Chiragh Kumar of Delhi rounded off a brilliant season on the Aircel PGTI with a well-deserved victory at
the season-ending LG Masters of PGTI at the Delhi Golf Club on Saturday. Chiragh shot a three under 69 to finish with a total of 13 under 275 at the Rs. 10 million event. Sanjay Kumar of Lucknow secured the runner-up trophy as he finished five strokes behind the winner.
Ashok Kumar, who finished tied 12th at the LG Masters of PGTI, ended the year as the number one on the Rolex Rankings with total earnings of Rs. 5,394,125. He thus sealed the Rolex Player of the Year Award
for 2010.
Chiragh Kumar (69-69-68-69), the overnight leader, did not have an ideal start to the day when he bogeyed the second. However, he made up for the lapse on the second with an accurate tee shot on the fifth that led to his first birdie of the day.
Chiragh, who hails from the Air Force Golf Club in Delhi, made another bogey on the seventh but the tide turned in his favour when he made birdie-eagle on the eighth and ninth. The eagle on the par-four ninth
was the result of an astonishing six-iron second shot from 185 yards that ended up in the hole. Sanjay Kumar in the meanwhile, bogeyed the seventh and ninth and therefore trailed Chiragh by four strokes at the turn.
Chiragh’s putter was hot on the back nine and he went on to make a number single putts. The 27-year-old dropped his last bogey of the day on the 12th and then birdied the 13th and 14th. The pars on the last four holes ensured Chiragh his second professional win and a winner’s cheque worth Rs. 1,585,000. The win at DGC helped him end the year in sixth place on the final Rolex Rankings for 2010.
Chiragh said, “Even though I was four shots ahead at the turn, I was only certain about my victory after Sanjay bogeyed the 16th and I converted a 15 feet par putt on the same hole.
“I made up for all the putts I missed earlier this week with some spectacular putting on the back nine. I am delighted about the fact that I was very consistent through the week. I shot four scores of three under or less. The crowd support I had spurred me on to play even better. I think I know my limitations now. I know myself better in golfing terms.
“This has turned out to be an amazing season for me. I had never thought that I’ll win two titles this year. I hope to carry this form Forward to next year when I play more international events,” added Chiragh, who celebrated his 27th birthday earlier this week.

“I can’t complain as I did not make a bogey today. A bogey-free round especially at the DGC is always good news. I sank some really long putts and my hitting was excellent. I just stuck to a certain game-plan and kept it in play today. I play a lot of golf at the DGC and familiarity with a particular course definitely helps when one is in two minds about how to play a certain shot,” said Chiragh, who is currently 18th on the Rolex Rankings with one win and six other top-10s in the 2010 Aircel PGTI season.
He added, “I don’t have a number in mind for the final round as I have no expectations. I just want to stick to the basics and keep it simple.”
Sanjay Kumar (66-71-70) made four birdies against two bogeys to end the day one stroke off the pace. He set up a birdie on the first with a good chip from the edge that ended up two feet short of the pin. Sanjay converted putts from eight to 12 feet for his other birdies on the 10th, 11th and 17th. He bogeyed the fourth and 12th as a result of two three-putts.
Sanjay said, “I’m hitting it good but need to improve on my putting in the final round. I made two three-putts today and cannot afford to make such mistakes in the final round.”
Shankar Das and Shamim Khan are in tied third at seven under 209. While Shankar posted an even par 72 on Friday, Shamim came up with a one under 71.
Gaganjeet Bhullar lies ninth at even par 216 and defending champion Ashok Kumar is in tied 10th with an overall score of two over 218.

Sanjay and Shankar in joint lead

NEW DELHI, DEC 16
Lucknow’s Sanjay Kumar and Shankar Das of Kolkata are the joint leaders at the end of round two of the LG Masters of PGTI. Both the golfers are tied at the top with identical scores of seven under 137. While Sanjay fired a 71 on Thursday, Shankar posted a 70. Shamim Khan’s 65 was the best round of the day and helped him climb to tied third along with Chiragh Kumar at six under 138.

Sanjay Kumar (66-71) followed up his 66 in round one with a steady 71 on Thursday. He started well, hitting his third shot within three feet on the first to earn his first birdie of the day. He pocketed his second birdie on the sixth where he came up with a superb approach shot that stopped a foot and a half short of the pin.
A couple of missed chip-putts resulted in bogeys on the seventh and 16th but Sanjay managed to pull a stroke back with a 10 feet birdie putt on the 17th.
“My putter was cold today. I hit a lot of regulations but did not convert the putts. I have started well in a number of tournaments but my putting has often let me down in the third and fourth rounds. I want to reverse that trend this time around,” said Sanjay.
Shankar Das (67-70) kept his title hopes alive with a two under 70 in round two. Shankar, a title winner on the Aircel PGTI in 2010, had a brilliant start to the day as he made a 15 feet birdie putt on the first. He then made pars all the way till the 16th before registering his second and last birdie of the day on the 17th.
Shankar said, “My iron-play was good today and I also made some very good par saves on the fourth and the ninth. I will certainly be in contention if my putting form picks up over the last two days.”
Shamim Khan (73-65) made an amazing nine birdies against two bogeys in round two to post his best single round score at the Delhi Golf Club which also happens to be his home course. Shamim, who was in tremendous form with the putter, made four straight birdies on two occasions, first from the fifth through the eighth and then from the 14th through the 17th.
“This is one of my best scores of the PGTI so far. I made as few as 22 putts today and that was the key to my low score. My best birdie came on the 17th where I converted a 25 feet putt. I hit it within five to six feet on most of the other holes,” said Shamim, who is currently placed fifth on the Rolex Rankings.
Chiragh Kumar of the DGC joined Shamim in tied third as he carded a second successive 69.
Digvijay Singh and Manav Jaini are tied fifth at four under 140.

Gaganjeet Bhullar and Ashok Kumar are tied eighth at even par 144.

First-ever European Challenge Tour in Ahmedabad

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
NEW DELHI, DEC 13
Marking another major leap for golf in India, the Kensville Golf & Country Club in Ahmedabad will host the first-ever European Challenge Tour event in India from January 13-16, 2011. Tapping into the explosion of interest in golf across India, the 200,000 euro Gujarat Kensville Challenge 2011 will make Ahmedabad only the third city in the country to host an international men’s golf tournament after New Delhi and Kolkata and will be the first ever international event to be held in Western India.

The Government of Gujarat has taken on the mantle of title sponsors along with the promoters Savvy Group who also own the Kensville Golf and Country Club.
After becoming the first Indian golfer to have a signature course, India’s most successful golfer on the world stage Jeev Milkha Singh will also hold the bragging rights for the first active player from India to host an event. The tournament will also see his participation as a player.
Speaking at the launch conference held today, Jeev said that the new tournament would provide great impetus to the sport. “This is an excellent development for Indian golf. Our golfers will benefit greatly from so many international golf tournaments scheduled to be held in India.”
After Kensville opened its gates in early 2009 to become the first 18-hole golf course in the state, the latest announcement gives Gujarat another big first. The tournament which is co-sanctioned by the Professional Golf Tour of India will see 114 golfers from across the globe, including top Indian professional golfers, in action.
One of Indian film industry’s most recognizable faces—Amitabh Bachchan —will mark his first tryst with golf as he inaugurates the tournament on the pro-am day, which is scheduled to be held a day before the main tournament.  Chief Minister Narendra Modi – the man behind putting Gujarat on the world map will himself felicitate the winner and also will pull down the curtain on the event.
Kensville has played host to national amateur circuit tournaments in the past but this will be the first international tournament to be held at the Jeev Milkha Singh-signature course.
Sameer Sinha, the MD of Kensville Golf & Country Club said that the tournament marks one more step towards making Gujarat an international golfing destination. “We always wanted a championship golf course in the state and hosting an European Challenge Tour event at our course is a great honour,” he said. “It will also offer a great chance for local fans to get a glimpse of international golf and also put us on the world golfing map,” he added. The challenging layout is also one of the longest courses in the country. With tight fairways demanding great accuracy off the tees, the venue promises to offer a stern test to the golfers. “This is just the kind of course young golfers need to get used to if they hope to do well at the highest level,”
Said Jeev. Despite India playing host to its first international golf tournament in 1964, the spurt in the number of tournaments has only been witnessed in the last few years. Jeev put that in perspective. “If we had so many world-class tournaments during my early career, India would have had a Major champion by now,” he said. “But I promise the day is not far especially after what Arjun (Atwal) has achieved on the US soil. This event will undoubtedly play a great role in enhancing the popularity of the sport,” added the ace pro.
The Challenge Tour is the second tier professional golf tour in Europe and is managed by the PGA European Tour. Introduced in 1986 the Tour now spans various continents with substantial prize money and world ranking points at stake. The past winners of the Challenge Tour order of merit include Edoardo Molinari, Thomas Bjorn and Henrik Stenson.
Padamjit Sandhu, Director, PGTI and Col. KD Bagga the designer of Kensville Golf and Country Club were also present on the occasion.

Pathania climbs the victory podium at CG Open

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
MUMBAI, DEC 11Mandeo Singh Pathania shot a gallant five under 65 in round four of the CG Open on Saturday to climb the victory podium for the first time in his professional career. Pathania, who hails from the Jaypee Greens Golf Resort in Greater Noida, ended the week with a total score of 14 under 266 at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club. Mukesh Kumar bagged the runner-up trophy, having finished three strokes behind the winner.
Mandeo Singh Pathania (67-66-68-65), who was overnight tied second, made a confident start in his final round with pars on the first eight holes. The 27-year-old knocked down his first birdie of the day on the ninth courtesy a 30 feet putt. Mandeo then picked up the pace with more birdies on the 11th and 12th thanks to some brilliant sand-wedge shots that stopped within eight feet of the pin.
Pathania emerged as the outright favourite on the back nine as overnight leader Vijay Kumar dropped a few strokes while Mukesh Kumar on the other hand failed to make a charge. Mandeo went on to birdie the 16th and then sank a 15 feet birdie putt to all but seal it on the 17th. The strapping six-footer’s bogey-free 65 ensured that he ended the tournament as the sole professional to have shot under par scores in all four rounds.
Pathania took home the winner’s cheque worth Rs. 12,93,200 and thus climbed from 23rd position to sixth place on the Rolex Rankings.
“I just stuck to the basics today and did not look at the leaderboard till I was on the 18th tee. The important thing was that I did not make any bogeys today. I knew I could lose the momentum if I dropped a bogey at any stage. I made sure that didn’t happen. I made a crucial 30 feet birdie putt on the ninth and then put my foot on the accelerator on the back nine,” said Pathania, who has two other top-10 finishes to his credit this year.
He went on to add, “I’ve come close to winning on a few occasions in the past and let it slip. I’m glad I’ve finally crossed the line. I dedicate this win to my father Col. Ravi Pathania who has helped me a lot with my game and encouraged me all along.”
Mukesh Kumar (70-67-66-66) of Mhow carded a second successive 66 to finish second at 11 under 269. Mukesh began well with three birdies on the front nine but could not seize the initiative from there on as he made three birdies against two bogeys after the turn.
Round three leader Vijay Kumar (69-65-65-73) of Lucknow secured third place after returning a one over 73 on day four. His total read eight under 272.
Ashok Kumar, Vinod Kumar and Harendra Gupta were joint fourth with matching totals of six under 274.
Ashok Kumar continues to be the leader on the Rolex Rankings with earnings of Rs. 52,31,625 for the season. He has now become the first professional to earn more than Rs. 50 lakh in a single season on the Aircel PGTI.

Vijay Kumar races ahead on day three

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
MUMBAI, DEC 10
Vijay Kumar of Lucknow raced ahead into the lead after returning a five under 65 in the third round of the CG Open at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club on Friday. Vijay’s second successive 65 handed him a two shot lead at 11 under 199. Mandeo Singh Pathania and Rafick Ali Mollah are in joint second with the next best total score of nine under 201.

Vijay Kumar (69-65-65) ran riot on the front nine with birdies on the first four holes. Vijay sank a 15 feet putt on the second and then fired his approach shot (pitching-wedge) from 130 yards out on the third to within a foot and a half of the hole. An excellent lob-wedge shot earned him a birdie on the fourth. The 42-year-old veteran bogeyed the par-three eighth after missing a chip-putt from the bunker.
Vijay, who is currently third on the Rolex Rankings, then used the pitching-wedge to great effect to set up a birdie on the 12th. The bogey on the 14th was a minor hiccup for the Lucknow-based professional and he came back well to make a strong finish with an eagle on the par-five 18th, where he sank a 25 feet putt. Vijay’s 65 was the day’s best score.
Vijay, a winner on the Aircel PGTI in the 2010 season, said, “I made some incredible recoveries after hitting a couple of wayward tee shots today. My drive on the fourth landed in the adjoining fairway but I still managed to extract a birdie on that hole.
“I also hit some good approach shots with the pitching-wedge and sank a few monstrous putts. I scored well on the par 5s. The eagle putt from 25 feet on the par-five 18th was special as it gave me loads of confidence ahead of the final round.
“I did not fare too well on the par 3s today. I was level par on the six par 3s in round three whereas ideally I should have been at least two under. I’ll look at improving on this front in the final round. I think a score of three under could do the job for me on the final day.”
Mandeo Singh Pathania (67-66-68) of Greater Noida shot a score of two under 68 to throw his hat in the ring on Friday. He is currently two strokes behind the leader in tied second along with Kolkata’s Rafick Ali Mollah (67-63-71) who carded a one over 71 in round three. Mandeo’s round of 68 featured five birdies and three bogeys.
Delhi’s Karanjit Singh Sandhu is in fourth place at eight under 202 while Mukesh Kumar, Sujjan Singh and Harendra Gupta are in joint fifth with matching totals of seven under 203. Mukesh fired a 66 on Friday.

Rafick Ali Mollah’s sizzling 63 puts him on top

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
MUMBAI, DEC 9
Kolkata’s Rafick Ali Mollah shot a sizzling seven under 63 in round two of the CG Open that catapulted him into the lead. Rafick’s second round effort moved his score to 10 under 130. Karanjit Singh Sandhu of Delhi, who fired a 69 on Thursday, is two shots off the pace in second place.

The cut was declared at four over 144. Fifty-two professionals made the cut.
Rafick Ali Mollah (67-63) followed up his first round 67 with a fabulous bogey-free 63 on day two to snatch the lead. Rafick had a dream start in round two as he birdied the first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh to be five under through seven holes. He chipped-in from the edge on the par-three second and hit a perfect sand-wedge shot on the fifth to create another birdie opportunity from five feet.
The 41-year-old then had a relatively quieter back nine with two birdies on the 10th and 18th. His near-flawless nine-iron tee shot on the par-three 10th stopped just a few inches short of the hole. Rafick then came up with another superb sand-wedge shot that led to an easy birdie putt on the closing 18th.
“My putting made all the difference today. I had struggled with the putter in round one. That was not the case today. I sank a decent 12 footer for birdie on the seventh. I was also delighted with my recovery on the 18th. My drive had found the rough on the 18th but despite that I managed to salvage a birdie on that hole,” said Rafick.
He added, “It’s important to take your chances on the front nine as the fairways are straighter and that presents more birdie opportunities. My strategy for the next two days would be to look for maximum birdies on the front nine.
"I was playing well in patches over the last few months and therefore could not produce any good scores. I’m glad that I’ve been able to put together a solid round after a long time.”
Karanjit Singh Sandhu (63-69), the first round leader, shot a 69 to end the day in second place at eight under 132. He had an action-packed first nine (10th to 18th) which featured four birdies and three bogeys. Karanjit’s second nine included a bogey on the seventh and a birdie on the ninth.
Karanjit said, “My putting was not as good as round one. I made a good birdie on the closing ninth, which is not an easy hole. The pins were tougher today and thus birdies were not easy to come by.
“I don’t have any score in mind for round three but will just try to hit maximum fairways and improve on my putting.”
Mandeo Singh Pathania of Greater Noida brought in a card of 66 to be placed third at seven under 133.
Lucknow’s Vijay Kumar and Chandigarh’s Harendra Gupta are tied for fourth at six under 134. While Vijay carded a 65, Harendra returned a 67.

Sandhu shoots a whirlwind 63, equals course record

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
MUMBAI, DEC 8
Delhi’s Karanjit Singh Sandhu shot a whirlwind seven under 63 on day one of the CG Open to establish a three-stroke lead. Ashok Kumar of Delhi, Pune’s Dinesh Raghuvanshi and Sujjan Singh of Chandigarh are in tied second at four under 66.

Karanjit Singh Sandhu got off to a blazing start as he birdied the first, second and fourth. He sank a 12-footer on the second and produced two spectacular chip shots to set up birdies on the first and fourth. A missed chip-putt led to bogey on the fifth and he thus made the turn at two under.
Sandhu, who has posted two top-10s on the Aircel PGTI this season, gave a display of some magnificent hitting on the back nine as his tee shots landed within 10 feet on the three par 3s – 10th, 13th and 17th. He converted all these birdie putts and went on to add two more birdies with a couple of excellent bunker shots on the 16th and 18th.
The Delhi-based golfer’s first round score of 63 equaled the course record for a single round set by Gurbaaz Mann earlier this year.
Karanjit said, “I got off to a solid start and was hitting it well through the day. The putts rolled in for me today. This is my lowest score at a professional event so it is the ideal start to the week.
“I have always enjoyed playing on this course. One has to be patient on this course and being too aggressive does not help. The greens are in great shape. The birdie that stood out for me today came on the par-three 17th where I landed my tee shot within six feet of the pin. The 17th is not an easy hole and sinking a birdie there gave me a lot of confidence when I stood on the 18th tee.”
Ashok Kumar, Dinesh Raghuvanshi and Sujjan Singh share second position at four under 66. Sujjan’s round featured an eagle, six birdies and four bogeys. Ashok and Dinesh fired six birdies against two bogeys in their respective rounds.
As many as eight golfers, including Mandeo Singh Pathania, Vinod Kumar, Ajeetesh Sandhu, Digvijay Singh, Vivek Bhandari, Harendra Gupta, Akshay Butta and Rafick Ali Mollah share fifth place at three under 67.
