Sri Guru Hari Singh College of Sirsa lifted the 18th Sail-Nehru Champions College Hockey Tournament by beating Lyallpur Khalsa College of Jalandhar by 3-0 in the final at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here today.
Jawaharlal Nehru PG College Bhopal bagged the third place as they snuffed out the challenge of DAV College of Jalandhar by 5-2.
Jasjeet Singh Kular of Lyallpur Khalsa College of Jalandhar was declared the best player of the tournament and awarded Bajaj Motorcycle by Rakshak Sports.
Victorious Sri Guru Hari Singh College received a cheque of Rs. 96000 while runners-up Lyallpur Khalsa College were richer by Rs 64000. Third place winners Jawaharlal Nehru PG College Bhopal got Rs 32000. Ms. Bina Shah General Secretary All India Universities gave away the prizes to the winners. Ramesh Kohli, Managing Director Beat All Sports, presided over the function.
In the final match, the Sirsa boys dominated the proceedings. In the 33rd minute of the play Gurbhag Singh opened the account witha field goal as Sri Guru Hari Singh College led by 1-0 at half time. In the 43rdand 49th minutes Harpreet Singh of Sirsa struck twice to consolidate the lead (3-0). The Lyallpur Khalsa boys tried their best to reduce the margin. However, it was not their day today.
