CHANDIGARH, SEPT 30
Indian Oil Corporation emerged winners by beating Punjab and Sind Bank by 5-2 in the final of the 41st SN Vohra's All-India Gurmit Memorial Football Tournament at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today.
Contrary to expectations, the final virtually turned out to be a one-sided affairs. The IOC made their intentions clear from the word go that they mean business. In their quest to claim the trophy, they were quick to open their account in the second minute when dashing Didar Singh scored a field goal.
Hardly had the cheers of the IOC supporters had died down when they struck again in the ninth minute and this time Gagandeep scored a field goal to make it 2-0. Just before the half time IOC were awarded a penalty corner and Inderjeet Chadha converted it with ease to give IOC a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half.
The Punjab and Sind Bank were able to got their first goal in the 43rd minute through Parminder. Deepak converted a penalty corner to increase the margin of IOC (4-1). The fifth goal for IOC was scored by Arfan in the 53rd minute.
Punjab and Sind Bank got their second goal in the 57th minute through Vikramjit Singh.
The winners were given a cash award of Rs 75,000 and runners-up Rs 50,000. Indian Navy were presented the Fair Play Trophy.
The following players were declared the best of the tournament: Jasvir Singh of Punjab National Bank (goalkeeper), Gauravjit of Punjab and Sind Bank (full back), Inderjeet Chadha of IOC (halfback) and Ved Prakash of Indian Navy (forward).
