CHANDIGARH, SEPT 23
Punjab State Electricity Board, Patiala overcame Northern Railways with an aggregate 5-4 margin in the sudden death tie-breaker of the SN Vohra’s 41st All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today. The teams shared two goals in the regulation 70-minute session.
The powermen from Patiala took the lead in the 14th minute through Ranjit Singh while Northern Railway restored parity when Ravi Bharti scored a field goal in the 59th minute.
Even the regular tie-breaker session of five strokes each, the deadlock continued as both teams converted three penalty strokes each. However in the sudden death PSEB clinched the issue through Rajwinder Singh.
For PSEB Rajwinder Singh, Manvir Singh and Gurpreet converted their stroke. Gurpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh muffed their changes. Northern Railway got their goals through Harish, Vivek and Raju. Ravi Bharti, Rajnesh and Raju missed their chances.
In another match, Central Reserve Police Force prevailed over young Ropar Hawks by 4-2 after leading 2-1 at half time. The way Ropar Hawks played in the initial stage of the game, it looked they could upset the seasoned campaigners. However CRPF had other ideas and converted most of the chances which came their way.
Ropar Hawks stunned CRPF with a field goal in the 12th minute when Gurwinder Singh gave a fine pass to Navjot Singh to put his team ahead. CRPF’s duo of Simon Tirkey and Ramesh shattered the hopes of Ropar Hawks.
With proper understanding and exchanges of quick passes they shared four goals. Simon Tirkey scored in the 25th and 29th minutes. Ramesh struck in the 51st and 57th minutes. Navjot Singh got his team’s second goal in the 59th minutes.
Tomorrow’s fixtures: CISF vs Navy (1.30 p.m), IAF vs Jay Bharat Academy Delhi (3 p.m.), EME vs PSEB (4.30 p.m.), BSF vs CRPF (6 p.m.).
