The Punjab Sports Department will hold selection trials to pick up Indian men and women teams for the second edition PrizeMoney World Cup Kabaddi Punjab 2011 at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana from October 2 to 4 for men and on October 4 and 5 for women, according to Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh.
A selection committee consisting of Shivdev (chairman), Jagdeshwar Yadav, Balwinder Singh, Harpreet, Balbir Singh, Devi Dayal, Principal Sarwan Singh (technical adviser) and GS Malhi (convener) has been formed to select the Indian squads.
The interested players should get them registered at Ludhiana District Sports Office and Guru Nanak Stadium at 8 a.m. They should bring with them the required documents, including two recently passport-size photographs.
With a view to checking the drug menace among sportspersons, National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) will depute a team to take urine samples of players during trials as well as during World Cup Kabaddi Punjab 2011 to be held from November 1 to 20.
The opening ceremony will be held at the Sports Stadium in Bathinda on November 1 and the closing ceremony is scheduled at Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana on November 20. Matches will be conducted in 14 venues throughout the state.
According to Pargat Singh 14 countries are staking their claims for top honours in the men’s section. The winners will get a lucrative cash incentive of Rs 2 crore and the glittering trophy. In the first edition, India had emerged winners after beating Pakistan and were awarded Rs 1 crore and the trophy by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
This year the Punjab Government had hiked the prize money. Runners-up team will be rich by Rs one crore (last year runners-up Pakistan received a pay cheque of Rs 50,000). The Government has also instituted a cash award of Rs 51,0000 for the third finishers. Besides each participating nation will get Rs 10 lakh as appearance money.
Four countires will compete for the women’s trophy. The World Cup Kabaddi Punjab 2011 has been instituted this year. The winners will be entitled for a cash award of Rs 25 lakh, runners-up Rs 15 lakh and third place holders Rs 10 lakh.
