India Under-19 off to a winning start

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com
TEHRAN, OCT 31
India’s U-19 boys got off to a winning start on the opening day of the AFC U-19 Qualifiers when they beat a 10-man Turkmenistan by 3-1 at the historical Takhti Stadium here on Monday.
Brandon Fernandes put India in the lead when he converted a penalty in the 39th minute only for Myradov to equalise in the 56th minute. Captain Malswamfela doubled India’s lead in the 60th minute while Prabir Das completed the rout in the 82nd minute.
One is bound to be a bit nostalgic the moment one steps in the Takhti. Built in 1973, it played host to the 1974 Asian Games. The 30,000-seater Stadium doesn’t have any stands on the far side -- it has been left clear for the Alborz Mountain Range to watch; and the Indians didn’t disappoint the majestic Alborz.
It was a clinical display by the U-19 colts. They were not in a hurry and preferred to play the waiting game. In fact, Turkmenistan tried to dominate early as they preferred to attack down the left with Captain Durdiyev Didar and Muhadov Suleyman staying keen in making a mark. But a stubborn Pritam Kotal stood firm, thwarting and intercepting.
As the game progressed, the Indians took over. Brandon Fernandes and Sehnaj Singh took control and with Holicharan Narzary and Captain Malswamfela interchanging, the Turkmenistan defence was stretched a lot.
The first goal came in the 39th minute. Brandon, who with his deft touches had always kept the rival defence guessing, got past Gurt Podarov with a sudden burst of speed on the right side. Caught on the wrong foot, Podarov, all in desperation had little option but to bring Brandon down inside the box only to be given marching orders. Brandon gleefully converted from the spot to put India in the lead.
Changing over, quite against the run of play, Myradov pulled it back for Turkmenistan in the 56th minute. But it didn’t last long as four minutes later, Fela side-stepped two defenders before blasting it in.
Keen to seal the fate early, Coach Colm Toal introduced a double substitution – Johnychand Singh coming in place of Brandon Fernandes and Prabir Das replacing Pronay Halder -- and the fresh legs sealed the final nail. In the 82nd minute, Prabir complemented stayed alert to tap in India’s third goal after Holicharan Narzary had snaked past a couple of defenders down the left flank. For India, birthday-boy Anto Xavier was red-carded in the 86th minute.
India next play Iran on November 2.
In another match, Uzbekistan U-19 defeated Pakistan U-19  3-0.
India U-19: Ravi Kumar; Narayan Das, Bikramjit Singh, Sonu, Pritam Kotal; Brandon Fernandes (Johnychand Singh – 67th minute), Anto Xavier, Sehnaj Singh, Pronay Halder (Prabir Das – 69th); Holicharan Narzary, Malswamfela (C) (Sunny – 85th).

Punjab in driver's seat against TN in Nayudu Trophy

by sportswire4u.blogspot.com (Balbir)
CHANDIGARH, OCT 30

Punjab tightened their grip on the second day of their match against Tamil Nadu for the Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy being played at Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium, in Patiala.  After bowling out TNCA for 284 in 106.5 overs, Punjab batsmen showed a lot of maturity and flourish as they ended the day on a sound footing knocking of 176 runs for loss of one wicket in 68 overs. They were 108 runs behind Tamil Nadu on the first innings with 9 wickets in hand.
Tamil Nadu, resuming at overnight total of 238 for 8 in 91 overs, were well served by a 64 runs partnership for the 9th wicket between Mohd. M and Ashwin Crist in 38 overs before Ashwin Crist was caught by Chauhan of the bowling of G.H.Singh for 20 off 120 balls inclusive of two boundaries.  The duo frustrated all attempts by the Punjab skipper to separate them as they dug in well. After Ashwin’s dismissal G.H. Singh brought the innings to an end by castling last batsman Aushik Srinivas for (02) while Mohd. M was left stranded at the other end unbeaten on 55 off 123 balls inclusive of 9x4s. The bowling honours for Punjab were shared by Sddharth Kaul  3 for 56, A.S. Sohi  2 for 52, G.H. Singh 2 for 57.
Punjab started their innings with skipper Kunwar Raina and Jeevanjot Singh. The duo gave a steady start to their team by scoring 52 runs for the opening partnership in 16.2 overs. However, Jeevanjot was given a reprieve by Inderjith who dropped him off the bowling of Ashwin Crist with Jeevanjot individual score on 21 and the team’s total score 27. Thereafter skipper Kunwar Raina was snapped by Bharat Shankar off the bowling of medium pacer Ashwin Crist for 25 off 60 balls inclusive of four boundaries. At this stage Jeevanjot was joined by wicket keeper Preetkamal and the duo batted with great aplomb. They negotiated both pace and spin attack with ease and poise and did not allow the bowlers to gain ascendency.
Tamil Nadu were made to pay for their earlier blemish in the field as Jeevanjot went on to grind their attack for 196 balls and in the process notching up an unbeaten 87 studded with 13 delecatable  hits to the fence. His partner Preetkamal also hit an unbeaten 57 off 153 balls inclusive of 8 boundaries. Their unbeaten 2nd wicket partnership had sofar yielded 124 runs in 52 overs.  For Tamil Nadu medium pacer Ashwin Crist bowled with a lot of fire and returned impressive figures of 19-7-36-01.The play was called off 15 minutes before scheduled time because of bad light.
Brief scores: Tamil Nadu (1st innings):  284 all out in 106.5 overs (Suryapparkash 44,Vijay Shanker 28,Aparjith B 59, Pratiban A.C. 60 Aswin Crist  20, Sddharth Kaul  3 for 56, A.S. Sohi  2 for 52, G.H. Singh 2 for 57).
